Your outside aids are there to stop both the shoulders and quarters swinging out.
Always remember the halt is a forward movement. You should ride up into the halt instead of thinking of pulling the front end in with the reins. This will ensure the horse’s quarters are engaged when you ask for walk again and that your horse is moving from behind correctly, instead of using his front end to pull himself along.
This is a handy exercise to use in the show ring when you are in the ‘go-round’. If your horse is likely to want to catch up with the one in front, or if everyone else is rushing thinking they can catch the judges’ eye, ask for halt for a moment, gain some space around you and walk on. You won’t be frowned upon by the judge for demonstrating good manners and a good walk.
Always repeat the exercise on both reins until you are happy with your progress but if for any reason you are having a bad day and the exercise isn’t working, put your horse away and try again tomorrow or when you are both in a better frame of mind.
