The latest health and wellbeing news for parents and children

One in 50 babies

born at home According to NHS England, almost 14,000 families chose to have a home birth during the past year – the equivalent of one in 50 babies. Indeed, according to health service experts, expectant mothers are currently being offered more choice over the maternity care they receive. Home births are particularly

popular with women who have already had their first child, as they may feel more relaxed in familiar surroundings. Other options available to mums-to-be include:

• Having a baby at a local NHS midwifery unit – this is designed to feel more like home than a hospital, and teams of midwives are on hand to help during labour.

• Giving birth in hospital, with midwives providing the majority of care but supported by doctors and other health professionals.

Is your family protected against measles?

Public Health England (PHE) is urging all parents to get their children vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella when the MMR vaccine is offered, or to take up the vaccine now if they didn’t have it when offered previously. Measles is highly infectious, PHE officials say, and anyone who hasn’t received

two doses of the MMR vaccine – including adults – is at risk, especially those who haven’t had the vaccine and are travelling to countries where there are large outbreaks of measles. One dose of the vaccine is about 90 - 95 per cent effective at preventing measles,

but after a second dose the level of protection rises to around 99 per cent. “Measles is incredibly easy to catch, especially if you are not vaccinated,” says

Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at PHE. “If you are in any doubt about your child’s vaccination status, ask your GP as it’s never too late to get protected.”

Your local Careway pharmacist can offer information about childhood vaccinations, as well as advise you how to find out if your holiday destination is affected by a measles outbreak (or you can visit www.travelhealthpro.org.uk for outbreak updates).
