Bikes on prescription

People in Wales who are overweight or clinically obese may be prescribed bicycles to improve their health and wellbeing. Under a new scheme currently being trialled in Cardiff, GPs will be able to give patients six months of bike hire subscriptions on prescription. “Cycling is a fantastic form of

physical activity and riding your bike is one of the easiest ways to reduce your risk of ill health. It’s also great for improving mental wellbeing too,” says Dr Tom Porter of Public Health Wales.

Is honey healthier than sugar?

The campaigning group Action on Sugar has revealed that honey and natural syrups contain almost as much free sugar as sugar (free sugar is sugar that’s naturally present in these types of food products). According to the group’s experts,

people are still being misled into thinking honey and natural syrups are a healthier option. “Too many calories from all types of

sugars contributes to increasing risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, various cancers, liver disease and tooth decay, all of which have devastating effects on health and wellbeing,” says Action on Sugar director, Katharine Jenner. One simple swap you could try is

having porridge with fruit instead of cereal for breakfast.

Serves 4

Ingredients 2 cooking apples 3 eating apples 1 bay leaf 30g unsalted butter, plus a little extra for greasing 1tbsp brown sugar 2tsp ground cinnamon ½ nutmeg for grating 1tsp vanilla paste 1 small lemon, juice and zest

For the crust: 75g unsalted butter 75g plain flour 75g rolled oats 75g brown sugar 2tbsp pumpkin seeds 1tbsp sunflower seeds 2tbsp chia seeds

Method 1. Peel, quarter and core all the apples, discarding the peel and the cores. Cut all the apple quarters into equal chunks then place in a medium

saucepan with the bay leaf, butter, sugar and spices. Add the lemon zest and juice, and let the apples cook down for 8 minutes, so they begin to soften but still hold their shape. Take off the heat and stir through the vanilla paste.

2. Preheat the oven to 180C. In a large bowl rub together the butter, flour and oats. When these ingredients are combined, add all the seeds, making sure they’re evenly spread through the crumble.

3. Lightly grease the crumble dish (use individual dishes or a single large dish if you prefer) and pour in the stewed apples, removing the bay leaf. Top with a good layer of the crumble mix and place in the oven for 20 minutes until the crumble is evenly golden.

4. Serve hot or cold with vanilla ice cream or a spoonful of creme fraiche.
