Hopefully you have remained healthy and avoided getting an annoying summer cold or other upper res-
piratory tract infection this year. In addition to physical activity and exercise, a healthy diet full of nutrient dense foods, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats all support the immune system. A very overlooked supplement; Quercetin is also a great immune booster. Quercetin is a natural, plant-derived flavonoid 400 timesmore potent than vitamin E that protects against
free radical damage. Quercetin appears to have many beneficial effects on human health, including anti-cancer activity, anti-ulcer effects, anti-allergy activity, cataract prevention, anti-viral activity, and
anti-inflammatory effects. It is a powerful antioxidant, anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory, and is the most prominent of over 5,000 flavonoid compounds found in food. Some of the best sources of quercetin include apples, blueberries, broccoli, kale, onions, many nuts and seeds, and tea. Additionally, quercetin has been used for decades to help support a healthy cardiovascular system. Studies have measured that a higher quercetin intake is associated with reduced risk of ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and various types of cancer and also aides in healing the gut. Quercetin's anti-inflammatory activity appears to be due to its antioxidant and inhibitory effects on inflammation-pro-
ducing enzymes (cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase) and the subsequent inhibition of inflammatory mediators, including leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Quercetin's mast-cell-stabilizing effects aid in preventing histamine release in allergy cases by inhibiting the formation
of the inflammatory mediators prostaglandins and leukotrienes, as well as histamines. Animal studies have shown quercetin to be protective of gastric ulceration. Quercetin's anti-ulcer effect has also been
shown to inhibit growth of Helicobacter pylori. Another common use of quercetin has to do with its ability to support the healthy response to occasional inflammation following sports activity.
