JOE‘S JOURNAL What a rollercoaster ride!

the horses a couple of easier weeks to recover and rest. They all enjoyed several days in the field, they were all very fresh when we started back at work.

I

I wanted to try and get them jumping on grass before the season really started so we made an effort to get into a show in Le Touquet, France. I took Don Diego de Plata (Didi), Tornado des Monts (Teddy ) and Gunner II (Romeo). Didi jumped some unlucky rounds which meant we didn’t qualify for the Grand Prix so we jumped the 1.45 ranking class on the last day instead, he had one down but jumped well. Teddy didn’t feel happy on the grass, we had one down one day and we retired in another. Romeo took a huge dislike to the water complex in the main arena. On the first day we didn’t even get near one jump that was close to it. The following day we went into the derby practise training, although I never planned to jump in the derby of course, it was just in the hope we would get closer to the water. He was having none of it! Romeo is a stallion and they do occasionally like to show you that they know best, fighting them is not going to solve anything in my opinion. So the next day we jumped in the outside ring which didn’t have a water complex, just a water jump which didn’t worry him at all and we finished 4th.

The following week was Royal Windsor, a show Dad loved so much. There were a good selection of National Classes for the horses. Jack jumped really well in the Fox-

hunter and in his first B & C which was quite big. Teddy jumped really well on day three and finished 3rd in the 1.35m Grand Prix. Romeo jumped in the Under 25s class, the highlight of the week for any young rider there. We jumped a beautiful clear in the first round along with several others. It was big enough and tricky too. There was one clear before me in the jump off, I knew I had to be faster than him and try to

put pressure on those following me. Will Funnell was there to help me warm up. I felt confident as I went in to the ring, Romeo felt good too. He jumped a fantastic round and was foot perfect putting

us in the lead. The next few riders tried to catch us but couldn’t go that quickly and leave the fences up. Esme who owns Romeo was there to watch the win, so was Mum, our farrier Nigel Turner and his family, Bea and Chloe from BeeWear and Floss, a very old friend of mine, who does my social media were all there to cheer me on; and they did! It was a wonderful way to finish the show.

The following morning we set off to Lamprechtshausen in Austria. I took Union Jack, Cacharel and Didi for a Young Rider Nations Cup Team. It was a two day drive, Charlotte and I shared the driving. The show had Ponies, Children on Horses, Juniors, Young Riders and Under 25s. Probably too many in one ring, the show did their very best to get things moving throughout the day but I still ended up jumping Jack and Cash at 11pm on two of the nights. It was a great experience for them, having not done it before I was worried about how they would get on or if Charlotte would even speak to me
