Robin Finlay from Equestrian Property 4 Sale
What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into your line of business?
Work hard, be kind. Encourage change and be flexible. The equestrian sector is not 9-5 and the passion surrounding horses is immeasurable, so if someone wants to spend 45 minutes talking about their horse, listen!
Is there anything you don’t like about your job? Do you come from a horsey background?
I grew up with a variety of ponies. The very willing gentle old soul who would stand quietly for hours while my friends and I brushed and washed them. The other end of the scale was the ferocious little welsh that would jump anything, win everything, but take your arm off if you weren’t looking. We always had the “underdogs” but we always came home with rosettes!
When did you start working in the equine business? What or who inspires you?
We set up The Equestrian Index in 2011 following a life changing trip to the Jordanian desert in support of the BHS. We bought Equestrian Property 4 Sale in late 2017 and are very excited about our new website which will be launching in June.
What are your greatest successes? What has really worked for your business?
Providing a service to equestrians that really helps them. We receive thousands of phone calls from people who don’t know where to start and by taking the time to point them in the direction of qualified professionals we really feel this helps protect the welfare of horses and also encourages people to get involved in the industry. Equestrian Property 4 Sale is taking that to a new level and we will be developing links so people are able to find their dream property and all the equestrian amenities they will need in their area too.
How do you relax after a long day of work? Riding, Running, Rosé.. not necessarily in that order! What are your ambitions?
To build Equestrian Property 4 Sale as a reliable source of equestrian property for sale or rent across the UK and potentially overseas, helping people find their dream home. To be able to support the welfare of horses in the UK through our business as well as young riders with limited opportunities.
Being patient, being interested. Listening as well as talking. Attending events and being available to people when they want to talk to you. Being flexible and open to change. Hard work always pays off! Saying yes and then working out how to do it!
For the property business, local print media to allow people access to equestrian properties for sale is crucial. Many people keep telling us that print is dead and it’s digital all the way, but I firmly believe there is a place for both, and they work best together rather than just one or the other! How do you juggle your horses with work?
I am between horses at present! I ride regularly with a friend and miss spending time just being around horses terribly, so perhaps a new pony later in the year, a nice 15hh allrounder if anyone has anything...
Music inspires me, sunshine inspires me and watching others succeed with grace and thanks inspires me. My children are exceptional human beings that inspire me to always strive to be a good person as an example to them.
A lot of my work is office based. I enjoy being outdoors and active so I have tried to make my office as pleasant as possible. Stand up desk next to a large sunny window! It’s still no match for fresh air though!
