066 FAMILY TIME SUMMER SPECIAL

CORNER KIDS’

The true quality of spending family time together, plus new & brilliant books for youngsters

A FAMILY WHO PLAYS TOGETHER, STAYS TOGETHER

A nationwide study of British parents, conducted by Little Tikes, has discovered that as many as 87% of parents worry that they do not play or engage enough with their children, with 75% also confessing that they feel guilty about the amount of screen-time their children have.

Asked why they struggle to have one-on-one time with their kids, one third said they are too tired after a long day at work and simply don’t have the energy to play – and 39% agreed that the stresses of modern living mean there is very little opportunity for ‘downtime’ as a family.

BE THE STAR OF YOUR OWN BOOK

Everyone wants to be the hero of their own story, especially children. Launched on World Book Day 2019, Books About Who allows users to do just that – simply type a child’s name into the website and discover a range of stories featuring characters of that name, whether it’s a mouse, a pirate, a shopkeeper or a best friend. Founder Cheryl Chan, a former publishing professional with a diploma in Children’s Education and Development, hopes

to spark new joy for reading with parents and children. “Depending on how common the child’s name is, a single search can produce over 30 books featuring one child’s name,” she explains. Cheryl handpicks each of the books herself after reading them at her local library. • For more information, visit booksaboutwho.com

Be Happy!

Francesca Geens, a productivity strategist, former academic, host of The Curious Parent Podcast and a mum-of-two from Kent, has created the HappySelf Journal for children. “I was getting increasingly frustrated at the press constantly telling us that children are growing up stressed and that mental health issues are on the rise,” says Francesca, adding: “At the same time I saw a trend in my productivity consultancy for a return to pen and paper, journaling, mindfulness and wellbeing. I became very interested in the science of happiness, how schools are introducing a growth mindset and what can be done to develop resilience in our children and launched the HappySelf journal in August 2018.” Just a few minutes of refl ection on the day gives

children the space to think about their emotions, be grateful for the positives in their lives and develop a growth mindset and positive attitude. • Available to buy online, £19.90, at happyselfjournal.com
