Last chance to see jazz legends at Rye International Jazz Festival

The August bank holiday weekend sees the Rye International Jazz and Blues Festival present a special headline afternoon concert at St Mary’s Church Rye on Saturday 24th August with award- winning singer and songwriter Rumer, when she performs a programme of favourite songs from her collaborations with Burt Bacharach and her

own catalogue of songs, with pianist, composer and arranger Rob Shirakbari. • Later in the day St Mary’s is also the venue for an exclusive evening with Queen of British soul Beverley Knight (pictured). • Sunday 25th welcomes Jon Cleary, whose love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural Kentish village of Cranbrook, where he was raised in a musical family, while completing Sunday’s entertainment is legendary bluesman Lucky Peterson. • Rounding off 2019’s Rye International Jazz & Blues Festival, on Monday 26th are the James Taylor Quartet and folk legend Richard Thompson, who take to the stage at St Mary’s Church at 3pm and 8pm respectively. • For times, ticket prices and availability, visit ryejazz.com

The Sussex Arms, Tunbridge Wells, 13th July I first came across Oli Brown of Raveneye about four years ago while writing for this magazine. My son Kieran and I were then lucky enough to meet him in the now defunct Zed Music Cafe in Sevenoaks in 2016. He told me that he had done some work with some of the members of Deep Purple, which intrigued me no end as they were one of my favourite bands growing up. Raveneye have toured globally and even supported Slash & Myles Kennedy, KISS and Aerosmith. It seems quite incredible that a band of this calibre is performing at such a small venue. I also saw them a couple of years ago at the Download Festival where they went down a storm. This is a band who is conducting a small tour before their appearance at the Ramblin Man Fair in Maidstone later this month (21st). If tickets don’t sell out, they certainly should, so be quick. • Call the venue on 01892 549579.

OVER THE EDGE Maize Maze and so much more…

As well as experiencing the famous Penshurst Place Maize Maze, which will be officially opened in mid-July, there are a host of other reasons to visit the stunning 14th century house and historic gardens throughout July and beyond. Running from 21st July until 1st September are Summer Sunday events, with garden pantomimes to laugh out loud at, crafts to create, and falconry to be fascinated by, you’ll be sure to have a fantastic day! Penshurst Place is open

throughout July from 10.30am to 6pm. Whilst many events are included in the standard admission price, some do have an additional cost and may need to be pre-booked. • Visit penshurstplace.com/whats- on for times, prices and tickets.

The Grey Lady, Tunbridge Wells, 20th July I say this quite a lot when reviewing acts that perform here – but I’ll say it again. Over the Edge is a fabulous band for this type of venue. Fronted by Laura Betts these guys will play tracks that will lead you direct to the dance floor. With five musicians behind her playing piano, guitar, sax, bass, drums and percussion belting out timeless classics from artists such as Santana, James Brown, Stevie Wonder and also a take on more recent hits. • Call the venue on 01892 544700.
