Each year, musicians, dancers and actors from around the world walk out from the wings onto the stage and dazzle audiences sitting before them. Artists fill the Art Gallery with their creative works, while the Museum offers a look at the past and present of Medicine Hat and the surrounding area. The education suites and large archives round out the marvel of The Esplanade.

The Esplanade is located across from the Medicine Hat Public Library. The bricks used to build the 110,000 square-foot building were donated by the Simmons family of I-XL Ltd. The colour scheme was chosen to reflect the colours of the prairie and the coulees. A time capsule was placed in a hollowed brick in the building. The capsule includes pins from the Alberta Centennial, the Museum and Art Gallery and the Gas City, photographs of The Esplanade construction and a scroll detailing the road to The Esplanade.
