capability to supply a customer base in western Canada and the northwestern United States.


Nearly 40 per cent of the methanol produced in Medicine Hat is distributed or used in Alberta. Even if you don’t know much about methanol, you can be confident that it is an integral part of your daily life.


“Methanol is an essential ingredient of modern life and is used to produce hundreds of industrial and consumer items,” Ramlochan said, adding that traditional uses make up around 55 per cent of methanol demand.


These items include, particle board, adhesives, paint, polyester carpets and fabrics, and windshield washer fluid, among many other uses.


The methanol industry’s fastest growing consumer base is the energy sector. As a liquid, methanol can be blended directly into or substituted for gasoline to produce a “high-octane fuel that produces fewer emissions,” said Ramlochan.


Methanol is used as a clean-burning marine fuel, as it can help the shipping industry meet increasingly strict


maritime emissions regulations. Waterfront Shipping—Methanex’s wholly-owned subsidiary, operates the world’s largest methanol ocean tanker fleet and, by the end of this year, 40 per cent of the Waterfront Shipping fleet can be powered by methanol.


“Waterfront Shipping has been instrumental in the evolution of methanol as a viable fuel option for the shipping industry,” said Ramlochan.


Methanex’s Medicine Hat plant is a major employer in the city, providing around 135 highly-skilled, well-paid permanent positions, in addition to term and contract positions.


“We are an active and involved corporate citizen and contribute to the social and cultural development of Medicine Hat through community outreach and a variety of social responsibility investment programs,” said Ramlochan


For example, Methanex awarded six scholarships to post-secondary students and donated to 33 separate charitable organizations in 2018 alone. In the same time span, its employees also spent more than 1,100 hours volunteering in the community.
