edicine Hat Mall’s marketing manager says her former job as a radio creative director prepared her for her current position.

“It was almost seamless,” says Janine Lindboe. “In radio, every day is different, much like here. We have over 100 tenants and you’re marketing for each and every tenant, and the mall itself.”

A Toronto-based headhunter reached out to Lindboe three times in 2013 suggesting she apply to the job at the mall before she accepted it.

“I create detailed marketing tactics for the centre, positively impacting the centre’s core financial objectives,” she said, adding that this often involves engaging with local media and helping plan special events.

The major challenge in this role when she started was finding her way around the mall’s back hallways, she said with a chuckle.

But on a week-to-week basis, she says her greatest challenge is to planning ahead, which is particularly important in the event a “curveball” is thrown her way, such as a fire alarm that causes an evacuation.

“Every Sunday afternoon, I work through my week and the following week, just so I’m prepared before Monday even starts and can hit the ground running,” said Lindboe.

She also makes sure to pencil in some leisure time for herself to ensure an appropriate life- work balance.

In radio, she was involved in creative strategy, making sure the scripts and production were on time, as well as getting to know the station’s clients.

“That’s very much like here – get to know your client, get to know your primary trade area

... I just research and formulate marketing and branding strategies, very much like radio,” said Lindboe.

Her favourite part of working at the mall is the sorts of different people she gets to meet from across the region, including people who come for the day in a tour bus from as far away as Moose Jaw.

It was Lindboe’s idea to provide the bus drivers with a free meal when they’re here.

“They’re professional drivers. They’re on the highway hours and hours through the night. Let’s take care of them,” she said.

She also appreciates the relative unpredictability of each day.

“You just don’t know what you’re going to get today, but embrace it, because it’s going to be beautiful,” Lindboe said.
