The 2019 EICF Technical Seminar saw a record 186 participants gather in Helsinki for a full day of technical papers centred around the theme of ‘Alloy Melting and Pouring – Casting Best Practice’. The keynote address was from Professor Juhani Orkas, Professor of Foundry
Engineering, Aalto University, and President of the Finish Foundry Association, who help to organise the event. Prof Orkas provided an overview of the Finnish Economy and the current situation of the foundry industry. Alongside the seminar, delegates were able to visit the table-top exhibition
with over 27 stands with a wide range of global suppliers to the industry, as well as the EICF booth, and attend a Welcome Reception at City Hall and a formal Dinner held in an historic red brick warehouse, now restaurant Ravintola Sipuli, in the beautiful setting of Helsinki harbour. During the Dinner, EICF Chairman Virgilio Oliveira took the opportunity to honour Mark Bijvoet, with a Memento to mark his recent retirement as European Technical Manager for Ransom and Randolph.
After a short coach ride, over 100 delegates were hosted by family owned
company, Sacotec Components Oy, Finland’s only investment foundry, with Chairman Antti Zitting providing a short overview of the company, which pro- duces over 3 million steel investment castings each year. The company offered a comprehensive tour of the facility including a visit to the Replicast licensed foundry, which is capable of producing precision castings of over 200kg in weight using polystyrene patterns. The company’s origins were in firearms and still provides castings to the adjacent SAKO, part of Beretta Holding. The event was also the occasion of the 2019 AGM for the EICF, which saw a number of new members joining the Board, as well as Virgilio Oliveira con- firmed as the Chairman for the coming year. Next year will see the EICF travel to Austria (Vier Länder Region Bodensee), to hold the European Conference in Bregenz, Austria, during May where the theme will be “Driving the Digital Transformation into Investment Casting” with a works visit to Feinguss Blank foundry in nearby Riedlingen, Germany.
