he Investment Casting Institute is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Stuart Uram.
The following is part of an interivew conducted in an effort to retain the history of investment casting industry.
Stuart Uram graduated from MIT with a doctorate in 1960 and took a
position with ® Hitchiner shortly thereafter. “I was really fascinated with
job at Arwood after a few years and put an announcement in Metallurgy News for his new ceramics core company, Certech, trying to interest investors. TRW metals gave Uram an order for 50,000 cores, and with that purchase order, he was able to obtain a loan. When the TRW job did not pan out,
Uram remained confident, and he soon received a large order from Arwood for a root wedge casting for engines on 747 aircraft. Then the orders started pouring in, and Uram soon outgrew his garage office space. Uram believes that most
entrepreneurs are just regular employees yearning for independence. “That’s part

of the entrepreneurial spirit: you want to do it the right way; you want to do it your way.” Today, Certech operates in three countries and produces many thousands of pieces each day. “My father owned a grocery store.
There was a business background in my upbringing because a small business is the same as a big business – it’s just a matter of the decimal point,” Uram said.
On November 1st, 2018,
representatives from the Investment Casting Institute recognized Stuart Uram with the distinction of being inducted into the ICI Hall of Honor during a small, personal ceremony in his home.
Stuart Uram died at age 84, on
Sunday, June 2nd, 2019 in New York City. He is survived by wife Lillian Langotsky, daughters Linda and Sarah Uram, son Alex Uram and 5 grandchildren.
