Tories want PM gone - what about our MPs?

CONSERVATIVE associations in Maidstone area are among more than 70 forcing an early ex- traordinary general meeting of the National Conservative Con- vention to vote on a ‘no confi- dence’motion in PrimeMinister TheresaMay. They include Maidstone and

the Weald, and Faversham and Mid Kent. Andrea Thorpe, chairman of

Maidstone and Weald (which voted 58% for Brexit), emailed constituency party members and 84% of more than 100 responses said Mrs May was not the right person to lead the Brexit negotia- tions and call for her “to consider her position and resign”. Theywant theConservativeParty

to elect a newPrimeMinister. The survey showed 10 of these

members had changed their minds fromremain to leave since the referendum, and 95%wanted “no deal” retained as a negotiat- ing leverwith the EU.

If the Prime Minister brings

back the current Withdrawal Agreement for a fourth Parlia- mentary vote, 64% sayMP Helen Grantmust vote against it. Mrs Thorpe told the Downs

Mail: “We are identifying real anger on local doorsteps about Government and parliamentary handling of Brexit, but in the main, meaningful support and sympathy for our local council- lors and candidates.” Paul Cooper (pictured) , chair- man of FavershamandMid Kent,

said hewouldwrite to his associ- ation's 450 members to gauge opinion and vote at the conven- tion accordingly. He said: “You can't complain

about a lack of democracy and not give members the chance to express theirwishes.” MrsMay’s future is hanging in

the balance, as ConservativeMPs are pressing her to set a date for her departure as PM, whether or not she has secured awithdrawal deal. Asked if she still has confidence

in the PM, Faversham and Mid Kent MP Helen Whately replied: “Yes”. Later she said: “Sorry, but I

think it’s probably best if I don’t comment.” Maidstone and the Weald MP

Helen Grant refused to say if she still had confidence in the Prime Minister.  Local elections, pages 10&11 Widdecombe joins Brexit Party, page 30
