BRIDEWELL COMMON AND GWENT LEVELS Bridewell Common on the Gwent Levels in South East Wales, sits within one of the largest surviving areas of ancient grazing marsh, drainage ditch and waterway systems in Britain and the largest of its kind in Wales. The Gwent Levels are registered as a Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest and their biodiversity significance is recognised through multiple Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and multiple Local Wildlife Site Designations. The fields at Bridewell are separated by a series of waterways known locally as ‘reens’ which create this area’s historical features which are unique to the Gwent Levels and offer a perfect habitat for insects like the rare Shrill Carder Bees and various birds, plants, mammals and amphibians. The whole of Bridewell is encompassed within the Magor and Undy Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the two most northerly fields were designated as a Local Wildlife Site in 2017.

Wildlife Trust and our loyal volunteers and supporters. Given time and money we now have this unique opportunity to create another nature reserve on the Gwent Levels and plan to make Bridewell Common as special for wildlife and people as Magor Marsh. Having these two conservation-managed landscapes so close together will perfectly complement each other and will allow for more endangered wildlife to flourish over a larger area.”

supporting our appeal everyone can do their bit to help. No donation is too big, nor too small – every single penny we receive will help towards our work to protect all the precious creatures great and small, found on the Gwent Levels. If anyone would like to fundraise with their group or business or is able to make a major contribution we would be happy to offer them a tour of Bridewell Common.”

Recent wildlife surveys carried out on Bridewell Common have found it is already home to a wide variety of creatures including critically endangered Water Voles, Otters, butterflies, dragonflies and birds such as Snipe, Stonechat and Reed Bunting. Once purchased, substantial conservation management is needed on the land and drainage ditches to restore this landscape to its full potential.

Gemma added, “Magor Marsh Nature Reserve is a vital reserve is for wildlife, as result of the long term conservation work by Gwent
