LADIES DAY DINNER AT WOODKRAFT

LewisLoves.com is a Cotswolds and South West lifestyle blog run by Adam and Sarah Lewis, sharing the very best the area has to offer. “Food is a particular passion of ours, and we can't wait to share our hidden gems with you. If there’s one thing that is synonymous with Cheltenham, it’s the races. Love them or hate them, there’s no denying they bring a much-welcomed boost to our local businesses – restaurants especially. Last month, I was invited to Woodkraft in Cheltenham to celebrate Ladies Day with a five-course chef’s tasting menu, cooked by Simon Wood. Those of you familiar with Masterchef will recognise Simon as the winner of the 2015 series, he also owns the fine dining restaurant ‘Wood’ in Manchester. As a fan of both the show and excellent food in general, I jumped at the opportunity to sample his cooking.

My dinner guest, Sophie and I, started with a smooth and creamy Celeriac Veloute with earthy black truffle – I could have eaten this all day long, truly delicious and paired with an Australian Fiano, The Swooper, which really cut through the creaminess of the celeriac. With the first course finished I was confident that what followed would be even better…and I wasn’t disappointed…

Subsequent courses included Belly Pork which was enhanced by cider, apple, sage and onion; slices of divine, red beetroot cured salmon which my dining companion loved. For days I talked about the incredible Wild Mushroom Ravioli, a masterful dish.

The main event was Cheshire Beef which was so tender that it melted in my mouth - each forkful as exciting as the first with well- balanced flavours of burnt onion, horseradish, Madeira and truffle combining magnificently. An Argentinian Malbec, Bodegas Norton, accompanied this course; notes of tobacco and ripe black fruit meant it was certainly well-suited to the plate. We finished with a palate-pleasing Citrus Tutti-Frutti; the zingy lemon was light and refreshing with a sweet German Riesling, Balthasar Ress rounding out the wine flight. A lemon dessert is my absolute favourite, and this one is definitely up there with the best of them!

Since it opened in December 2018, I’ve eaten breakfast, brunch and lunch at Woodkraft (with a small baby in tow too) and been made to feel very welcome each time, but there was something extra special about the service – as well as the food – at supper. I suspect it had a great deal to do with the sparkling personality of the lovely Evie who really knows her wine. Her passion for food is tangible! Service can so easily make or break a meal and I was thrilled to be treated so well here. Simon came out to chat to us after service and struck me as an immensely likeable and self- deprecating guy who more than deserves his success. The Ladies Day dinner was the first supper that Woodkraft have hosted – I certainly hope that it isn’t the last!
