Halesworth & Southwold Community News May 2019 21 Halesworth and District Museum ALESWORTH and District

Museum is always working to expand its offer through collaboration. In April, the Museum became a theatre as it provided the venue for a new short play over the weekend of the INK festival 2019.

to be publicly executed in

This annual festival, the premier showcase for new writing from East Anglia, has been attracting national attention. The play, 'Reasonable Doubt' by Greg Hanson, was a dramatic reimagining of the story of the John Ducker,

the last person

Suffolk. Eight performances had been planned, but it proved so popular that two more were staged. The performance space was very intimate and multiple performances meant that 242 people saw the play during the course of the weekend. The Museum had also staged an exhibition about the murder of PC Ebenezer Tye in 1862 for which John Ducker was convicted. had

provided

The Museum the

research

background for the play, which was a vivid reconstruction of the events surrounding the death of the young police constable and raised some doubts about the evidence presented at the subsequent trial. The Exhibition remains in place at the Museum,

so if you want to learn more about the case, come and visit. April was a busy month for the Museum in many ways. On April 11th over 70 people attended a talk by Rob Shorland Ball

about the Southwold

Railway which ran from Halesworth to Southwold from 1879 to 1929.

Our next talk will take place at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church on Thursday 9th May when Willy Rackham will be talking about the History of the Longbow. From Robin Hood to Agincourt, the longbow has a special place in our national consciousness. Come and learn more about the history of this formidable weapon.

THE Pear Tree Centre building behind Cutlers Hill Surgery is going up fast. We hope to finish the build in September, but there will be plenty to do before we open at the end of the year including recruitment of staff and training. The Centre

will provide a

“drop in” facility for anyone with a diagnosis which is life changing or life limiting; it is not only for cancer but for the other illnesses such as the Dementias and Neurological conditions, which

can have devastating

effects on the whole family. The isolation many people and their families feel when they are presented with bad news is well documented. All sorts of emotions and worries flood in.

give leaflets and try their best to explain the nature of the illness, but it is difficult to take everything in. The Centre will provide a safe haven for people to reflect and talk with time to ask questions such as; how will I manage financially? How do I tell the children? How is my illness and treatment going to affect me? Who will give me and my family emotional

support? All these questions

can be worked through with the staff at the centre, who will sign post, help make the appropriate appointments and provide information and support and listen. The Centre will also host support groups for carers and patients and provide sessions of relaxation and well-being and complementary therapies. Our website will tell you more and how you can contact us for more information and how to donate. We

continue to have

donations via My Donate, standing orders and our 50/50 club. All these donations are vital for the future income of the Fund. Over the next three years the running costs of the Centre, inclusive of complementary therapies and counselling will average £158,000 a year, 70% of which is already sourced for the first 3 years. Over the next three years, this leaves us an average of £48,000 to raise each year. Much of the funding will come from Trusts and Foundations.

The generosity

and enthusiasm of local people and organisations have helped us rise in the region of £20,000 a year for the build, so we are

confident that with your help and our own fund raising activities we can reach our goal. On Wednesday 3rd April the Halesworth Volunteer Centre and The Pear Tree Fund hosted a volunteer recruitment day which was very successful. The Trustees are so grateful to the lovely people who are offering their time and expertise to help with the smooth running of the ear Tree Centre. We have received many completed application forms and will get in touch when we have appointed the Manager which will be around September/October.

If

you still have some application forms and wish to complete them please don’t forget to drop them into Cutlers Hill Surgery as soon as you can. If you do not have an application form you can apply on line or e-mail Barbara Kell on barbara.kell@peartreefund.org or phone 01986 798491. At the Wentworth Hotel in Aldeburgh, ninety two ladies sat down at our Pear Tree Fund lunch to enjoy a delicious two course meal. The total profit was £1,185 which was terrific. Our thanks go to Vigdis Middleditch for liaising with the hotel and organising the event, the stalls Tilly and Grace, Pink Cactus, and Woottons for their donations and the Events Committee for all

their support. We received donations in memory of Audrey Joy Peck and Mr Elvyn Frederick George Pinkney. The Trustees would like to thank their families and friends for their generosity. The Wenhaston

Methodist Church

donated £60 which they raised in lieu of sending Christmas cards. Other donations include those from Iris Baker, Doreen Hale and Micheal Leigh-Pearson who continues to generously support us. Thank you to you all. The 50/50 winners in March were Lorraine Hunt, Maureen Anstey and Rosemary Thomas. April’s winners were

Tony

Parsons, Alan Witherby and Bill Pagan.
