THE early Spring convoy returned safely very Saturday 6th

by bad weather, and very long delays at frontiers. It took 6 hours to cross from Romania into Bulgaria on the way out, and then a further 4 hours on the return journey. With another mechanical problem, a tyre blow-out plus a flat battery, the convoy took a week to arrive in Kavala in northern Greece, the ferry port for the islands, but eventually it arrived on Lesvos where each day, after unloading and sorting the aid, they teemed up with Salam Aldeen, another truly


international aid worker


from Denmark who leads Team Humanity, with large numbers of volunteer helpers of various nationalities, many being refugees themselves from the infamous Moria camp. Team Humanity uses two warehouses, and the space outside, and has formed a safe haven and playground for mothers and


From Lesvos they crossed to Chios where they again met up with Toula, a local resident and founder of CESRT (Chios Eastern Shore Response Team). CESRT is on standby 24/7 to go to the aid of refugees who arrive by boat and need help. At 3am on the morning after the convoy arrived, Toula and her team were called upon by the authorities to help a boat loaded with 38 terrified refugees which was in difficulties on the rocks. In spite of their best efforts and a helicopter search, 2 women and a child drowned, and another 2 women are missing. Toula was tired and distraught; you can imagine the effect on all concerned and still the refugees continue to arrive, but the world seems oblivious and not to care. Terrible


weather struck


with gale force winds, and for two days all ferries between the islands were suspended. The team was stuck on the island for another two days but helped the CESRT team with hot drinks and children’s play sessions on the outskirts of Viall Camp. This is a government run facility, clearly set up by UNHCR whose tents and plastic sheeting are evident everywhere, and it houses over 1,100 souls. Charles describes it as ‘the most shameful tented living conditions I have seen in the 22 years that I have been running the charity. At least 6 hanger sized Rub-Hall tents (marquees) house families whose living space is defined by boards or cardboard and in at least one just by ropes from wall to wall supporting blankets,


to create separate living spaces’. He was told that


raw sewage often flows outside along open storm drains that are next to former ships’ containers that house the luckier families. They saw a few Portaloo toilets, one of which had blown over in the gale spewing its contents. Eventually, two days late, they got away and arrived in Athens where they went straight to the Pamparaiki warehouse (the former Olympic Stadium!) and unloaded pallets of food and other items. From Athens they took aid to the refugee camp at Thermopylae which is famed for its hot thermal springs. The camp there houses 400 adults and 250 children and is one of the better run camps but, strangely, tourists and refugees are adjacent in a bizarre juxtaposition of circumstances and were swimming together in the hot springs!

This short account can only give a snapshot of a very complicated situation which has largely been swept under the carpet by the rest of the world.


Tens of thousands of these souls have been refugees for many years and have never known any other way of life. Just think of the humanitarian problems that are growing up and will face our children and grandchildren!
