a hard time competing with the large chains. Fantastically, Medicine Hat sports six independent coffee shops! They even offer an official cafe tour, so you can get an insider glimpse into the local coffee culture. Visit
mhcoffeetour.com for more.
Canalta Centre
Here’s a travel tip, if you’re the sort who wants to feel like you’re a part of the action, make a point to see events at intimate venues such as the Canalta Centre. With 7,000 seats, this indoor arena isn’t small - but seeing a concert here is a much different experience than in a stadium. Home of the Medicine Hat Tigers, hockey fans have plenty of opportunities to catch this WHL team in action.
Windmill Garden Centre and
Butterfly House There’s more to this garden centre than annuals and perennials. With a petting zoo, gift shop and ice cream
cafe, this is one stop all family members can agree upon. The big draw is John’s Butterfly House. Expect to find a few moments of zen as you become mesmerized by the gentle fluttering of wings. Besides butterflies, there are fish, turtles and quail roaming around the tropical environment.
Tongue On The
Post Why should summer lay claim to music festivals? Alberta’s first winter music fest takes place every January. During this folk music festival, you’ll find cozy cafe type concerts, plus jam sessions and traditional performances at unique settings such as at Medalta. Know an aspiring musician? Nudge them towards the Singer / Songwriter Night to take their talent to the next level.
Catch Some
Sun! Boasting 330 days of sunshine each year, Medicine Hat is one of Canada’s sunniest cities.
There are several sublime spots to soak up the rays, but two are especially notable. Echo Dale is ideal for water lovers with two lakes (one for swimming and one for boaters), while Police Point Park is a hotbed for nature lovers, with plenty of interpretive programming.
Duffers will be pleasantly surprised to hit the links at the four local golf courses. Not only are the green fees affordable here, but courses open far ahead of others in the province, thanks to all that sunshine and mild weather.
Southern Alberta
Light Horse
Museum The Southern Alberta Light Horse is a military regiment that has existed since the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. The museum is open September to June, and it’s fitting to tour, especially now as we’re in the midst of the WWI centennial. Visitors gain a better understanding of "No Man's Land” and can view a replica of WW1 trenches and tunnelling sections.
