traveling by train and have your journey abruptly halted by mounted gunmen? Well that is exactly what is likely to happen if you motor out from Calgary or Edmonton and board Alberta Prairie Railway Excursion train at Stettler. Round-trip excursions are on board a vintage train, powered by a 1920 steam locomotive or second generation diesel-electric locomotive from the 1950s. Passengers experience the scenery, history,

wildlife of the Prairies. All trips depart from Stettler and travel to Big Valley, a village of some 350 people, 35.6 Km (21.4 mi) south. Tours vary in length from 5-6 hours and include professional on board entertainment live on-going commentary on-route, a rural Alberta community unchanged from the 1920s, train robbery and an Alberta roast beef or other buffet style community hall meal. Trains include a children’s play area, concession and bar areas, open-air observation coach, and various styles of enclosed passenger coaches with opening windows. Both the train and destination community are handicap accessible.
