Dinosaur bonebeds, a haunted coal mine and ghost towns

Dinosaur Provincial Park lives up to the region’s claim to fame as the world’s largest graveyard with the biggest bones. Its Centrosaurus bone bed is the size of two tennis courts. Paleontologists speculate that the bone bed contains the bones of up to one thousand Centrosaurus that likely perished in a flash flood. Two-hour guided hikes to the bone bed are offered from May to October every year. www.tprc.gov.ab.ca/ parks/dinosaur/flashindex.asp

From the early 1900s to 1960, Drumheller was the Fort McMurray of coal mining. One hundred and thirty-nine mines operated in this part of the Canadian Badlands. The Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site at East Coulee is the only one left. Its creepy wooden tipple is a favourite

haunt, especially at Halloween. The mine’s former bathhouse is just as creepy. Big meat hooks attached to ropes on pulleys hang from the bathhouse ceiling. Miners once used these to hang their street clothes on, high above the coal dust. The mine is open for tours from May to October with special tours/events at Halloween.

Ghost towns dot the Canadian Badlands map. In Rowley (pop. 12), a small group of local volunteers desperate to keep their little town alive, came up with Pizza Night in Rowley. Every month (except December), the group makes pizzas to order, starting at $10 a pie for two toppings.
