Polo Manager’s Report


Antony Fanshawe reflects on the best season ever at Guards Polo Club. His team – polo office, vet, ground staff, umpires and match officials – delivered a record number of matches in the most amazing weather


L


ast year’s season was the best we have ever seen. The weather enabled us to play a


staggering 560 matches, probably a record anywhere in the world and a tribute to the great team that I had working alongside me here at Guards Polo Club. Tara Smith and Kym Lake in the Polo Office expertly juggled fixtures, grounds, umpires, match officials and the inevitable “no play dates” to ensure that all of our patrons and players had lots of opportunities to play across all of our grounds. Meanwhile, Club vet Holly Baird worked tirelessly to maintain our enviable welfare standards, including the never-ending task of making sure all ponies had access to water at all times. Her patience last summer was remarkable! Huge thanks must also go to


Peter Svoboda and his team of hardworking groundsmen. I was


extremely impressed with how they dealt with the long, hot and dry conditions that were the hallmark of last summer. They worked 24/7 all summer, delivering fields that were always ready to play and by the end of the season Peter’s entire team was

still hard at it despite running on empty themselves. They really are the unseen stars of the show. The feedback from the players


was worth all of our hard work though. Without doubt, there was never a better year to play polo at


Guards Polo Club. In fact our fields were pretty much exhausted by September because we were able to play so much polo. What more could our patrons and players want? We could have played polo every day last summer! A secret of our success has


been great organisation across all the relevant departments and combined contribution of all those striving to create first- class polo at Guards Polo Club. We continually address the problems that the sport of polo – and Mother Nature – throws at us to ensure that the same issues are not repeated season by season. Even making small changes can have big impacts. For example we have planted a
