BUSINESS OF POLO

stand-out moment last year happened long before any polo was played. Herbert Wigwe inspired his guests to dig deep and they raised a staggering $2million for UNICEF – all before lunch! Thanks to Hildon Natural Mineral

Water’s generous support of the competitive Archie David Cup, our finalists can continue to sample the memorable atmosphere of a big occasion, truly befitting the UK’s biggest eight-goal tournament. Hildon’s founder, the late Christian Heppe, would be proud of the brand’s commitment to this most important of eight-goal tournaments.

I would also like to personally thank,

within these pages, Lando Simonetti and Enrico Roselli of La Martina for their continued sponsorship at Guards Polo Club. Not only does this iconic clothing brand support the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy but also the hugely influential Varsity Day. In addition to putting their name to this most historic of student sporting fixtures, La Martina and Guards Polo Club also support Oxford and Cambridge behind-the-scenes with advice on licencing and sponsorship. Offering these young players such support at such a crucial stage in their polo careers is invaluable. As another vote of confidence in Guards Polo Club, La Martina has also carried out a major interior refit of its Smith’s Lawn Store over the winter, creating the perfect setting for its wonderful Spring/Summer collection of clothing and polo kit. Proof of this outstanding partnership is that Guards Polo Club and La Martina have signed a long- term, global licence agreement which will enable Guards Polo Club’s fashion range to be properly developed and sold worldwide.

David Matsumoto is so enthusiastic with the game that he is sponsoring a team in a series of 15- goal tournaments... playing under the OS Challengers moniker

Our partners behind the scenes are equally important. Not least Mosimann’s, who have raised the standard of food and drink in the Clubhouse beyond measure. Pre-booking is a must now for all Clubhouse Sunday lunches if you want to ensure a seat and the introduction of the more intimate, Mosimann Supper Clubs provides the perfect moment to enjoy a stunning sunset on the Clubhouse Terrace, lingering over a Clubhouse Supper. Such a high standard of hospitality has brought a new name to our door – and

cellar – for 2019 – Vérité, the official red wine of Guards Polo Club. Barbara Banke, the owner of Jackson Family Wines, the makers of Vérité in California, will be at Guards Polo Club this summer to introduce more of us to her Californian-based wines, which are proving popular with wine collectors and connoisseurs across the world. Laurent-Perrier, of course, remains our champagne of choice. Not only is Laurent- Perrier perfect to celebrate a match or tournament win at Smith’s Lawn but this champagne house’s Andrew Perry will once again host a tasting dinner for our members this season, introducing a wider audience to Laurent-Perrier’s impressive range of champagnes. Although I do hope that there will be some Laurent-Perrier remaining at the end of the 2019 season so that we can all toast the completion of the work on The Princes’ Ground and the start of the exciting redevelopment work on grounds four to eight. In addition to the near-completion of the Vision for the Future strategy, we should have plenty more to celebrate this year. Thanks to my excellent team here at Smith’s Lawn – James Neighbour, Antony Fanshsawe, Tara Smith, Tissy van Reyk, Stephanie Price, Pam Manku, Holly Baird, David Dickman, and Diana Butler – we will be able to deliver excellence on and off the field of play. So whatever your link to Smith’s Lawn I hope that you have a most enjoyable and successful season.
