Drive-thru plans bring objections
PLANS have been put forward for a major development in Snod- land, which would include Mc- Donald’s and Costa Coffee drive-thrus. The application, byWrenbridge
(Snodland) LLP, relates to Van- tage Point North, which lies be- tween the Snodland to Strood railway line and the A228 Holbor- ough Road. The plans include building four
warehouse units and creating 200 car parking spaces. The appli- cants say there will be about 300 jobs across the site. The drive-thrus are earmarked
for the section nearest Peters Bridge, while the warehouses would be built nearer the town. Residents from Snodland,
Halling, Wouldham and Burham have objected to the drive-thrus. They are concerned about rub- bish, traffic, and boy racers, and say there are enough fast food outlets in Snodland. One, from Wouldham, said: “I
Business Focus Alexanders barbershop and the bull sign.
As soon as Alex heard that the Old Bull Pub on the Holborough Road was due to be turned into a Co-Op, Alex, owner of Alexanders Barbershop in Snodland, knew that the Co-Op wouldn’t want the Old Pub signs, of which there were 4 in total. So Alex set about trying to get one of the signs, to hang in his Barber Shop. When asked how he eventually came into possession of one of the Pub signs Alex said: “I just kept asking different builders that we’re working on the Co-Op, I eventually was able to speak to the site manager who told me that all the signs from the Pub were to be donated to the Snodland Museum on Waghorn Road. Fortunately, when I asked Andrew Ashbee who runs the museum, if I could have one of the signs, he was very happy for me to have one as it meant it was staying in the local area.”
When asked why he wanted a pub sign in his barber shop Alex added: “I Love it, because it’s a local piece of history, and it’s stayed in the local area. In fact it’s only crossed the Road!”
New barber shop team.
Alexanders Barbershop would like to welcome its newest member Mark to the team. Mark, who was previously plying his trade in Rainham, where he lives, now works at Alexanders full-time and joins Louise, and owner Alex. To help customers avoid having to queue for to long, here are the busy and quiet times of the Barber Shop:
Quietest day: Thursday. Late night: Wednesday open until 7:30
Busiest day: Saturday. (Saturday after 2:00 is quieter then the mornings)
During the week, mornings (9:30-3:00) the shop is much quieter then afternoons. After 3:30 when the schools come out, the shop will be busier.
Closed: Sundays and Mondays.
don't feel there are adequate traf- fic measures to deal with the vol- ume that will be visiting.” Another,
from High Street,
Snodland, said: “We do not need another takeaway in Snodland. It will bring congestion and trouble, smell and rubbish.” A resident from High Street,
Wouldham, said: “The amount of parking will also encourage boy racers to meet and use it as a racetrack.” One from Halling High Street
said: “It is irresponsible to put in another fast food chain in close proximity to four primary schools and one senior school, consider- ing the epidemic of obesity our country is facing.” However, a resident from Old-
fieldDrive,Wouldham, supported the application, but added: “I think a Section 106 requirement should be to provide a footbridge or underpass to give safe access to those living in Holborough Lakes.”
Club awarded WWI balls
THE Football Association has presented Snodland Town with two limited edition balls designed by Turner prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger. The footballs feature a specially-commissioned art creationmark-
ing the end of WWI, and focus on how football brings people to- gether. Theywere inspired by the Christmas trucematches played during the war. The clubmarked the occasion at the recent home game against
Kent Football United with the help of Richard Szwed, of Birling Road, Snodland, pictured here with players. Richard, an ex-serviceman, is awell-known figure in the town, es-
pecially during the Poppy Appeal, when he dresses in vintage Army uniformwhile collecting donations for the worthy cause.
