A MOTORIST, who carried po- lice kit in a Ford Fiesta that was fittedwith concealed blue lights, has been arrested by genuine of- ficers. Theman, in his 40s,was pulled

over in West Farleigh during a routine patrol onMarch 7. The officers, who searched the

vehicle, seized a police-style high visibility jacket and fake warrant card. The discovery has sparked con-

cern that unsuspecting local driv- ers may have fallen victim to a police imposter. District Commander for Ton-

bridge andMalling, Chief Inspec- tor Peter Steenhuis, said: “Even though thisman was not a police officer, his car had blue flashing lights in the grille and on the dashboard, and he possessed po- lice-style clothing and identifica- tion. “We would like to hear from

anybody who may have been stopped by thisman, particularly in the Maidstone or Medway areas, in circumstances that may have caused them to believe he was a police officer.” Police say motorists should

only stop for unmarked cars if they are certain they are legiti-

mate. If in doubt, signal you are aware of the request to stop, and drive steadily to the nearest pub- lic place, such as a petrol station or police station.Never speed off, because genuine officers may think it is an escape attempt. Police advise keeping the door

locked until the driver is satisfied of the officer’s identity. They say unmarked police cars can stop ve- hicles only if they are carrying a constable in uniform. The man apprehended in West

Farleigh, who is from the Gravesend area, was arrested on suspicion of fraud and imperson- ating a police officer. He was re- leased

pending further

investigation. Readers with information

should contact Kent Police on 01622 604100 quoting crime refer- ence 46/43488/19.Or, alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
