Clean air technology aids livestock and farm staff

The innovative adaptation to reduce dust created by mechanical bedding machines was among an array for feeding, bedding and ma- terials handling equipment at the event organised jointly by Kuhn and Leicestershire-based machin- ery dealership Farol. The Cleanstraw system, which
can be fi tted to the Kuhn’s Primor bedding machines, applies a fi ne mist of water to straw as it leaves the directional chute, signifi cant- ly reducing airborne particles that can cause respiratory problems.

Saxelbye, Melton Mowbray, Kuhn product manager Katie Calcutt said it was important not to un- derestimate the impact that a dusty environment can have on both livestock and anyone work- ing in sheds when bedding is in progress. “Poor air quality is known to be
a factor that can exacerbate res- piratory problems in cattle, and
it can also affect farm workers,” she said.
Ms Calcutt said dust from
straw was likely to contain pol- len, moulds, bacteria and tiny fragments of plant residue – and could be a contributory factor in pneumonia in cattle and con- ditions such as farmers’ lung in farm workers. The Cleanstraw system com- prises a 64-litre water tank and
three misting nozzles mounted at the exit of the straw blowing chute. Nozzles are fed by a pump which provides enough water to treat 12 to 18 bales of straw. Applying a mist of water at this
rate preserves the straw’s absor- bency potential whilst eliminating excessive levels of airborne dust by reducing the amount of time that these particles remain sus- pended in the air.
