Rising star scholarship offers prize worth £800
T
he search is under way for Suffolk’s future farm- ing movers and shakers
– with prizes worth £800 for the winner.
Suffolk’s Rising Star Scholar-
ship Award is being organised by the Suffolk Agricultural Associ- ation. It’s open to young persons aged from 19 to 30 year old who are working in agriculture or the allied industries. The award recognises young-
sters in the early stages of their chosen career but already start- ing to stand out. They will live and work in Suffolk, be actively involved in the sector, be endorsed by their employer and involved in projects or initiatives at their work place.
Proactive people
These proactive people could al- ready be introducing new ideas to the businesses in which they work. This might be through the introduction of new technology, different working practices or just the ability to look afresh at ways to tackle an everyday issue. They will have a passion about promoting a proper understand- ing about food and farming to the next generation, perhaps they get involved in the School Farm and Country Fair, the Food and Farm- ing Student Day or an education- al event at a local show or school.

Award aims to give the recipient a valuable set of opportunities that enables them to develop new net- works and access to high quality knowledge and learning during the year of the award. “We hope the award will be one of great personal value and help to show to others what young peo- ple can achieve’’. £400,000 fine after employee electrocuted by powerline
A company has been fined after an employee was killed by an overhead power line strike on a Hertfordshire farm. Darren Waterman was killed when the grab arm he was using to unload material came into con- tact with an 11kv overhead pow- er line at Fillets Farm, Hunsdon. Mr Waterman was a driver em- ployed by Just Grab Services. The site was managed by Options En- ergy Resource.
Luton Crown Court was told that the accident happened on 16

September 2016. Every year in the UK, two people are killed and many more are injured when ma- chinery comes into contact with, or close proximity to, overhead power lines.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that Options Energy Resource had identified the risk from power line’s in risk assessments but had failed to implement them and ad- equately plan construction work and to train its employees. Options Energy Resource of
Hanbury Drive, Leystonstone, London pleaded guilty to breach- ing section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974. The company was fined £400,000 and ordered to pay costs of £17,242. After the hearing, HSE inspec-
tor Samantha Wells said “This was a tragic and wholly avoid- able incident, caused by the fail- ure of Options Energy Resource LLP to implement safe systems of work and to ensure that health and safety documentation was communicated and followed.
