post-harvest food waste is driv- ing product development at Mar- tin Lishman.

Agri-tech solutions to food waste U

sing low-cost digital technologies to meet the challenge of reducing

“The fact that 1.3bn tons of food

are wasted globally each year, with almost 60% of crops spoilt, dam- aged or wasted during post-har- vest operations, presents a huge challenge to the food production industry”, says Gavin Lishman, Martin Lishman’s managing di- rector.

“But digital Agri-Tech solu-

tions, leading to more effi cient post-harvest methods, do not need to cost the earth and can reduce losses to as low as 1-2%.” At the core of the company’s on- going product development pro- gramme is the Martin Lishman Professional Crop Storage Sys- tem. Pile-Dry and FloorVent Ped- estal crop cooling systems are in- stalled in on-fl oor and under-fl oor

storage sites.

The latest Pile-Dry Pedestal is suited to grain stored deeper than 7 metres, where fast overhead fi ll- ing can exert considerable force. It is built 50% stronger to withstand this pressure and has an airfl ow increased by more than 30%. “Faster cooling at less energy

cost is the key to reducing stored crop losses, but our climate no longer provides a steady supply of cold air when needed,” says Dr Lishman. “That is why remote crop temperature monitoring and automatic fan control are now es- sential.”

The Barn Owl Wireless cloud- based automatic fan control and remote temperature monitor- ing system saves at least 40% of storage energy costs and provides full traceability via the internet without the need to travel to the store to take crop temperatures or operate fans.
