Mums advised to wait a year between pregnancies
The World Health Organization guidelines suggest that women should ideally wait 24 months between having a baby and getting pregnant again, but now researchers writing in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine say that waiting a year to 18 months may help reduce any health risks for both mother and baby. Women, who have smaller gaps between their pregnancies, however, may increase their risk of complications such as a premature birth or a smaller baby.

• Cut the caffeine: Gradually reduce your caffeine intake throughout the day and have your last cup of tea or coffee (or other caffeinated drink) no later than lunchtime.

Many scientists believe that genetics play a role in obesity, but now researchers from University College London have found that a child’s genetic risk can be reduced if they grow up in a healthier home where kids have access to healthy foods and where they spend more time being physically active. The experts discovered that when kids grow up in homes where there’s less access to fruit and veg, and where they spend more time watching TV, genetics accounted for 86 per cent of their obesity risk. In healthier homes, however, genetics accounted for just 39 per cent of the children’s obesity risk.
