THE BEST NEW MUSIC COMING STRAIGHT OUTTA NORWICH brought to you by

AUDIOLINE

FREYA ROY

The Backdrop You have your heart set on a career. You enrol on the perfect course to help you fulfil your dream. Then fate takes a hand…

So before I tell you the rest of this story, let me assure you it has a Happy Ending. April sees the release of Norwich based Freya Roy's new album called AHLKE, hot on the heels of two single releases Midnight Train and 22 Movements. Both have received high praise and accolades, suggesting the album is going to be hot property this Spring.

BBC Introducing came across Freya as a teenager singing soulful jazz with guitar, loops and keys. It was amazing to see and hear her play such carefully constructed and thoughtful music whilst still so young.

The Wilderness Years… Freya got a place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to study jazz guitar. A pretty cool start to a career - and in the first few months

worked hard at her craſt, rehearsing, playing, gigging. Things then went off the rails as she began to have real pain in her wrist. Not good for a guitarist. A diagnosis of Hypermobility Syndrome pretty much did for her and Freya returned to her Suffolk home watching daytime TV and turning her back on music.

A condition like that may not disappear but with careful handling it did improve. Freya’s determination came good and she finished her first year at Birmingham, transferred to Leeds College of Music to study first Jazz Performance and Production, and then Composition.

We’re looking at a near five year period from that confident teenager to the current releases. The fact that she has slogged her way through that time says as much about her character as her music.

An Artist Emerges It may have been a tortured and painful path but what we now have is

something of exquisite beauty. Listen to the music, the singing, the playing on Midnight Train and be prepared to be blown away.

Recently chosen as an act on the longlist for Glastonbury Emerging Talent, featured in Vogue as one to watch, supported by MOBO Help Musicians fund. This is music payback time for Freya and we couldn’t be more pleased. Oh, and did we mention her new work is all released on her own FCR Music label , set up to help change the perception and visibility of women and minorities in the creative industries.

Look, there are gigs coming up in the area, Festivals in the summer, album released soon, videos already online. Pretty soon you won’t need us to tell you about Freya Roy, her work will tell the tale for her.
