Whether it’s DOT, federally mandated or work place drug testing the flood of synthetic urines submitted to collection sites and laboratories for drug testing is at an all time high and climbing. An Executive at a national collection site stated they are combating a “tsunami of synthetic urines”. Recent studies have shown that the frequency of synthetic urine use in the population surrounding a moderate sized regional laboratory is between 10 to 30%.
What is synthetic urine? Its fake urine sold and manufactured to mimic every aspect of normal human urine and is designed to appear and pass as human urine in laboratory testing.
A national laboratory chain recently sent an email blast out to its customers not to worry there are 17 States that have written laws to prevent the use of substituted urines. This course of action is completely ineffective as the onslaught of synthetic urine is increasing at an alarming rate putting the public directly in harm’s way. The state of NC passed a bill in 2002 – Chapter 14 Article 52 14-401.20; that makes it a felony to substitute samples submitted for drug testing. It’s been 15 years and this statute is completely ineffective. The impact of synthetic urine use on insurance testing to hide a health condition is enormous. An individual could get a million dollar policy on themselves while duping the insurance company to hide their potentially fatal condition. A direct quote from a director of the world’s leading lab chain concerning the use of synthetic urine is that “chemistry is not the answer”. Nothing could be further from the truth.
