MOST of you will have seen the glowing obituaries about Ezra Leverett in the local papers. Few people are able to achieve so much in their lifetime, but Ezra managed to pack so much into his. He played a very important role over the last few years in helping the old Halesworth Playing Fields Association to re-establish itself after years of neglect. Ezra Leverett did so much for Halesworth and he touched the lives of so many as evidenced by the hundreds who packed St Mary’s Church for his Memorial Service. He will be sorely missed. HCSL has submitted a planning application for four two bed apartments to be built on the piece of ground on the right just before entering the HCSL site proper. This piece of ground was gifted by WDC to HPFA several years ago, at which time it was zoned by WDC for residential development. This area was and never has been “designated as sports land” and so does not come under the Charity Commission’s rules and guidelines for disposing of “Designated Land”. The innovative design is by

a well known local architect, Brian Haward, who among many things, designed the refurbishment of Southwold Pier. The design makes best use of the sloping site so that the new apartments will not directly overlook neighbouring houses. There is a major shortage of two bed apartments in Halesworth, especially among young couples. These four will have a fantastic view over Halesworth and go some way to satisfying this demand.

our sense of wellbeing too. It brought a smile to everyone’s face!

Our next meeting will be

held on Wednesday 13th March at 10am at Patrick Stead hospital Garden Room. Do come and join us for coffee, chat and support.

Halesworth Community Sport and Leisure

The funds generated by the sale of this plot will be used to improve facilities for sport on the rest of the HCSL site. How much that can be improved will depend on the sale price achieved but modernising the pavilion and improvement of the parking area are high on the “to improve list”. As many of you know, the outdoor swimming pool was built by Halesworth residents. Not only did they raise the funds to finance its building but many physically took part in its construction. Once built, HPFA leased it to WDC to manage and run the pool. A clause in the lease stated that if WDC no longer wished to manage the swimming pool, it should be returned to HPFA in a going condition.

The current Management Committee of HCSL has finally managed to gather and collate the HPFA Management Committee minutes from the time that the swimming pool was demolished. No minutes can be found of the HPFA Management Committee ever discussing or agreeing to

the demolition of the

swimming pool. A Freedom of Information Request to WDC on their decision to demolish the swimming pool, which ignored the conditions of the lease contract, provided limited information. HCSL has taken legal advice on the matter and will be following it up. It would appear that the swimming pool was improperly demolished and a much loved sporting and recreational facility destroyed without HPFA or Halesworth residents having the opportunity to take it back into their control.

THE Town Council elections will take place on Thursday 2nd May. The period for submitting the nomination papers is from March 15th to 4pm on April 3rd. Anyone who is interested in becoming a Town Councillor should take their nomination papers

the following locations:- The Elections Office, East Suffolk Council (Suffolk Coastal DC), East Suffolk House, Riduna Park, Melton, Woodbridge, IP12 1RT or The Elections Office, East Suffolk Council (Waveney DC), 2 Canning Road, Lowestoft, NR33 0EQ Nomination papers can be downloaded in the link below or from the Clerk’s office, London Rd, Halesworth. www. eastsuffolk.gov.uk/elections/ election-notices-and-results/ The full Council normally consists of a maximum of twelve members. Town Councillors are all volunteers, training will be provided but this is not a paid position. Town Councillors

need to

have sufficient free time to attend meetings, to read and respond to emails and conduct their

own research when

required. The Council has a wide variety of committees and working groups such as Finance & Personnel, Planning, Communications, Community Infrastructure, Community Centre, CCTV and Neighbourhood Planning. There is lots more general information

the Clerk’s office on 01986 874517. Repairs to Mansion House, Chediston Street. As many of you may have noticed the road was temporarily closed for three days to enable roof structures to be craned into position. The work is now completed and the road is reopened for one way traffic towards the Market Place and Chediston (from London

Rd and the Thoroughfare). Vehicles exiting the Market Place & Old Brewery Yard must go round via Chediston Street/Roman Way. Pedestrians can access all areas as normal. Suffolk County Council has asked the Town Council to convey their gratitude to everyone for being patient and understanding during this period. CCTV. The Council have in principle agreed to go ahead with CCTV in the town subject to reviewing comments and feedback

from the public.

The Police have been fully supportive of the proposal and would use the equipment to detect

and deter crime.

Indications suggest that many residents and businesses would also be in favour of CCTV as a deterrent. The Council has provided the proposals in more detail on the website and more information will be provided in due course. It is proposed that the cost will be met by the Community Infrastructure levy which is provided by new housing developments. Free Parking. The Council

hopes to be able to confirm the details of a new agreement for free parking for 2019-2020 very shortly. Bus Services. The Council were shocked at the recent news by Konnect Bus that they were intending to withdraw the bus services between Halesworth and Southwold and Halesworth and Norwich in March this year.

The

Council has been lobbying Suffolk County Council and our MP to ensure they make every effort to find another bus company to take over the services. The Council would like to thank the residents who attended the monthly meeting on this subject and to all those who have written in with their comments

and suggestions.

We will keep you all updated as soon as we hear any further news.
