With schools having to find increasingly creative ways to balance the books before considering any extras, how can we plug the funding gap? Susan Young finds out

They’re very nice things we wanted for the children, but also essential – if we hadn’t extended the dining room the children wouldn’t have had enough space to eat,’ says Matthew Smith, school business manager of Sheringham Woodfields in Norfolk, where the children have complex needs. ‘It’s certainly cheaper and less painful to invest time in fundraising than to go through redundancy programmes or see children go without the resources they need,’ he continues.
