36 PROJECT REPORT: HEALTHCARE BUILD & DESIGN

Yeoman Shield Twin Handrail Chosen for New Care Unit at William Harvey Hospital

system as part of the scheme to create a new Cardiac Critical Care Unit (CCU) and Cardiology ward along with an access corridor at William Harvey Hospital in Kent. The access corridor was fitted with

Yeoman Shield’s Guardian Twin Handrail in a stunning colour combination of burgundy and mid grey with matching accessories and attractive stainless steel connective brackets helping to add a unique touch to the décor of the area. Chosen for its dual functionality the Guardian Twin handrail incorporates an ergonomic upper handrail as support for people who require assistance and a lower robust protection rail, which sitting slightly forward guards both the handrail and the walls from marking and damage caused by the passage of wheeled equipment. The same Guardian Twin Handrail system

was also deployed in the CCU this time with a red lower rail, a striking contrast to the mid grey handrail. Matching red Corner Protection Angles, both 90° and 135°, were installed to vulnerable corners protecting from impact damage. Fire doors in the unit also benefitted from

the installation of Yeoman Shield’s fire rated door protection products, shielding the door from impact damage that can be detrimental to the functioning of a fire door. Fire rated door edge protectors to both

meeting and hinged edges as well as door protection panels were added to the door

eoman Shield were assigned by main contractors Bauvill Construction to install a wall and door protection

without affecting the integrity of the original fire door. Yeoman Shield were able to assist with exacting time scales on the project by a quick turnaround of product and service with a site survey, manufacture and installation of the product being completed in two weeks. Paula Stone, Head of Operational Facilities Management at East Kent University Foundation Trust commented “The lower wall protection element of Yeoman Shield’s Guardian Handrail now fitted in our high traffic areas will reduce the cost of repairs and maintenance overtime. The upper handrail of the system will help less abled patients get around hospitals giving them something to grab on to if needs be, helping to prevent falls. “The design of the rail has the added

benefit of being easy to clean which adheres to our infection control policies.”

Clean, private and secure environments for laboratories enhanced with secondary glazing

P

siOxus Therapeutics Ltd is a UK and US based cancer therapeutics company listed 25th in the Sunday Times Hiscox

Tech Track 100 in 2017 for its ‘Gene Therapy for Cancer’ platform technology for the treatment of solid tumours. PsiOxus has recently expanded into 21,000 sq ft of new facilities including a state of the art research and development laboratory in The Quadrant at the Abingdon Science Park. The main contractor, Morgan Lovell

specified Selectaglaze, to improve the thermal insulation and security of the building. The original primary windows were thermally inefficient, draughty and let heat escape. PsiOxus’ research and development environment demands the utmost cleanliness so a glazing solution was required to meet these requirements. As part of the refurbishment, windows with fire ratings separating the labs and corridors were also required to conform to building regulations. Selectaglaze met the brief by installing a

In addition, a total of 22 Series 40 fixed

total of 15 horizontal slider units with 6mm toughened low-E glass in the two and three pane options to all primary windows. The inverted u-channel section was included to sit in the bottom of each frame to minimise the dust traps and enhance the ease of cleaning. All of the secondary glazing on the ground floor was fitted with Satinovo obscurity glass.

light units were fitted as viewing panels in the research and development laboratories. The Series 40 has a sturdier frame which can house higher weights of glass than required in a standard unit. The vision panels within the internal walls were fitted in 6mm toughened glass and in the lab areas, units were fitted with a 10mm Pyrodur glass, providing 30 minutes of fire integrity. The successful on-time installation of secondary glazing has greatly benefited the working atmosphere in the labs. The PsiOxus staff are already reaping the benefits of the new secondary glazing in their daily operations. Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in secondary glazing, established in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holder since 2004. It boasts a wealth of knowledge and an extensive range of products to suit all projects.
