26 January 2019 Halesworth & Southwold Community News Stop Idling – it gets you nowhere!
THe Junior Road Safety Officers at Holton St Peter Primary School have been very busy this term. They had
a visit up to the Hammonds JeT Garage to find out more about emissions as part of a campaign to
improve awareness about idling vehicles outside school and the concerns around emissions and other
such factors in relation to that. They have learnt that 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting, 2 minutes spent idling is equal to 1 mile of driving and that an idling engine can produce up to twice the emissions of a car that is in motion! With the days drawing in,

they have also been raising awareness throughout the school as to the importance of wearing reflective or fluorescent clothing – whether walking home from the park or taking the dog for a walk. It is also very important for bike riders to make themselves clearly visible to other road users by remembering to use reflectors and bike lights
too. For those living in areas where there are no footpaths and very little street light, extra care needs to be taken when out and about. They also took part in
the “BRAKe” road safety week by running a colouring competition at the school with winning entries being displayed at the school’s Christmas Fair which was held on Friday 23rd November. Fundraising for BRAKe was also undertaken by the Junior Road Safety Officers during the Christmas Fair and they would like to thank all those who donated to this very good cause!

his Cat is the english folk story surrounding the real- life Richard Whittington, a wealthy merchant and later Lord Mayor of London. The legend describes his rise from poverty-stricken childhood and the fortune he made through the sale of his cat to a rat-infested country, although in reality the real Richard Whittington came
from a wealthy family and probably never owned a cat. Bright Sparks Panto has
been performing in Leiston for over 30 years, putting on family favourites such as Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, and most recently Beauty and The Beast. In 2014 the group took a slight diversion from the norm and performed ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Pantomime’ as part of the Centenary celebrations for Leiston Film Theatre. The group is pleased to welcome Martin Clarke to his Bright Sparks directorial
