ONCe you and your partner have decided to marry, you should really start planning your wedding day! It is probably best to allow at least twelve to eighteen months in order to get everything sorted. If you have a particular date

you will need to discuss with the Rector the reading of the Banns. The Banns, a public announcement of your intention to be married, will then be read out on three consecutive Sundays. If you are planning a church wedding, the Rector will discuss the service with you and you may like to select favourite hymns or decide whether you wish for a choir at the ceremony or bells to be rung. For a Register Office service,

you will have to give Notice of Marriage to the register office of the district in which you live. Valid for twelve months, the notice must be given in person by one of you. Once the date and venue of

the wedding have been booked, it is most important to book the reception. You should draw up a rough list of guests to get an idea of numbers. Many venues have a “Wedding Package” brochure which will give details of food choices and

costs per head as well as other services they may offer. Start discussing your head-dresses,

bouquets,

buttonholes and flowers for the church and reception with your florist as soon as possible. Wedding cakes often take a

few months to mature, so you should soon decide who you would like to make your cake. Discuss design, shape, content etc with them. One of the most important

things for the bride to do is to choose the dress. It may take several months to find the “perfect” outfit. Outfits for the groom, best man, bridesmaid(s) and page boy(s) also need to be considered. Your wedding album

photographs should be a wonderful reminder of your special day. Book a photographer and discuss your requirements. Choose your wedding rings

from a reputable jeweller. Remember to buy your gifts for the best man, ushers and attendants. Prospective brides should

visit their hairdresser to discuss the style for the wedding day. Your hairdresser may be able to do your hair in the comfort of your own home on the morning of the wedding. If required, beauticians should also be booked for your make-up and

manicure. Invitations should be ordered

as soon as the date and venue are confirmed. These should be sent out to invited guests at least two months prior to the day. Guests will soon start

asking you for a gift list, so it is important and helpful if this is compiled a few months before the wedding. To prevent duplicate gifts, it is possible to choose a gift list from a given company - the gift list company will then tick gifts off as they are ordered. Most of the important

aspects of the day have now been covered - but there is

still the honeymoon to book! When it comes to arranging where you want to spend your honeymoon, talk to the travel agent about what you are looking for - destination, quality of accommodation and facilities. Having made your choice, don’t forget to take your marriage certificate with you, as many hotels, on learning that you are on your honeymoon, may offer you an upgrade of room! In our editorial, we have

detailed some of the most important points to be considered and hope that anyone planning a wedding will find our suggestions useful.
