More unusually, flocks of parakeets – once
glamorous foreign imports but which, once escaped, colonised in the wild, can be seen noisily making their way overhead. Tey are more recent inhabitants to the park, which has changed very litle since the 17th century. After a short distance, walkers follow the
long, straight Broad Walk. Tis was one of the few creations made within the park at Knole, which was leſt virtually untouched apart from the planting of beech and broad tree-lined avenues which replaced some of the older coppiced woodland. Tis was quite uncommon at the time as most landowners went to great efforts to design and landscape their parkland. Aſter the Broad Walk, the route turns leſt into
the Chestnut Walk, an ancient avenue of trees where newer plantings are closely fenced as protection from the deer. Continue straight and follow the path as it
meanders gently downhill through more open woodland, pass the pond by Keepers Cotage then cross the golf course. Look out for long views across the valley to the chalk Downs beyond. Tis is a great time to stop for a well-earned
refreshment break at the tea rooms, set in a stone courtyard at the back of the main house. Here you can feast on hearty, locally-produced food and warming winter drinks before re-joining the path across the grasslands towards the car park. If you wish to extend your walk there are
numerous paths, including a bridleway, that cross the park and there are many opportunities to take diversions to extend or shorten a circular walk through this peaceful and popular landscape. It is an opportunity to combine a winter
walk with a visit to Knole Park, take in its spectacular views a stone’s throw from the town of Sevenoaks.
