Figure 12: A close-up of the Inconel anchor, now degraded to hollow tube

material. On their own both made good sense, as the silicon against alkali

Figure 13: Phase diagram of Silicon and Ni creating a low melting eutectic as low as 955°C

carbide has good resistance attack and the Inconel have

excellent high temperature properties along with good corrosion resistance against many corrosive media. However, after only a few days operation, the anchors completely disappeared leaving only hollow tubes behind. The evidence from the refractory and instrumentation

indicated that temperatures were far below the melting point of the Inconel. With the help of the metallurgists, it was concluded that the silicon from the refractory material became available for reaction with the Nickel in the Inconel, and as the phase diagram in Figure 13 illustrates, eutectic compositions can form where the melting point is as low as 955°C.

Engineer’s annual conference. This year we will focus on the waste to energy sector. Anyone with contributions are welcome to contact us for delivering a paper or poster, and of course if you found some of this information interesting and want to discuss it, attending the conference would be the ideal place.
