lining(s) an auxiliary heating equipment was necessary to cover the lower temperature period, e.g. from ambient to approx. 350 - 400 °C, where the main burners should take over and realize the remainder of the required heating schedule. Unfortunate the maximum temperature allowed in the central air ducts was only 250 °C.


In such a way the objective to have an even heat distribution and to reach all corners could be met. (appendix 1). Temperatures of the hot gases were measured on a number of locations, but at least at the entrance and outlet of each equipment. The result showed clearly the 'delay' of the temperatures in succeeding equipment.


It showed also that drying and firing has to be continued until all 'critical' CALL FOR PAPERS

refractory linings have reached the required firing temperature. Although the given schedule does not show that fact, it means that considerable time is required to heat up 'remote' parts, such as convection banks, lined ducts and the stack itself as well.


Drying and firing with auxiliary burner equipment is the preferred method of such an initial procedure. Although gas-fired burners have generally a large turn-down ratio, and larger than oil-fired burners, still they are not enough for the start-up and first part, say up to 600 °C, of common procedures. So they require 'assistance' by a separate equipment.
