Biologists in the field Know your beets!


Sibford catering department has been educating pupils in some of the benefits of eating different fruit and veg. First vegetable to find itself under the spotlight was the beetroot. The tasting table offered beetroot smoothie,


beetroot brownie, baked beetroot crisps and beetroot hummus.


Pupils meanwhile were educated in the benefits of


eating beetroot which includes: • Building blood cells • Cleansing intestines • Maintaining healthy new cells • Helping to prevent sickness • Preventing heart disease • Detoxifing the liver.

Three Year 9 pupils turned the tables when they led a lunchtime training session for Sibford staff! Silas, Jack and


Fox brought in their own shot duck, partridge and pheasant and showed staff how to prepare them ready for the table. Emma Crocker, Head of Food


and Nutrition, said: “It was such a pleasure to see these young men demonstrating their fantastic passion and skills and explaining the process so fluently. Thank you boys. It will be interesting to see if any of our staff now go for a game bird this Christmas rather than the traditional turkey!”


A Level Biology students Mingjing and Max visited Nettlecombe Court Field Centre near Taunton in Devon where they joined with students from other schools for a four day study trip. The students looked at different environments, such as streams, rock pools and grassland areas. In each environment they collected data about indicator species, correlating them to biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors. This work forms part of their practical skills assessment for their A level course.
