Juniors embark on world tour

J

unior pupils returned from their half term break to discover that they were off on a transglobal adventure!

For the past six weeks lessons have been centred around a

creative curriculum based on the Jules Verne’s novel ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. Pupils arrived on day one of the new half term to discover

that the school had been decorated with an ocean liner, train station, hot air balloon, a number of yachts and four elephants. They were then treated to a vertical learning day which saw them trying out multi-person skis to travel over frozen polar wasteland; negotiating a nightline through the jungle; transporting water across the desert and building a Da Vinci bridge to span a ravine. Subsequent activities have included: visiting St John’s Roman Catholic School in Banbury where pupils in Years 3 and 4 took part in a Europe Day; learning all about American Thanksgiving Day from Meghan, mum of Jonah in Year 3, Samuel in Year 6 and Henry in Year 8; discovering facts about the Egyptian pyramids; and making ceremonial Hastimangala elephants in pottery.

The themed curriculum even

extended to this year’s Christmas plays … with Reception and pupils in Years 1 – 3 presenting ‘Children of the World’ and Years 4 – 6 using music and drama to tell the story of Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout (for pictures see page 13). Junior School Head, Edward Rossiter said: “The children whole heartedly seized the topic. The learning produced has been of a particularly high standard and the knowledge they have picked up has been amazing.”

Nick Hadley launched the topic by arriving at school in his trusty old car!
