On October 16, the first new semi- automated container stacks at the Port of Virginia’s Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) were put into service. Stacks 7, 8 and 9 are now processing container transactions for over-the-road trucks. This significant milestone inaugurates NIT’s transition to the industry-leading operating plan already in place at Virginia International Gateway (VIG). Looking ahead, the port plans to commission nine new RMG stacks at NIT by the end of calendar year 2018. By 2020, NIT will offer service via 30 RMG stacks, utilizing 60 newly-commissioned RMGs.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Rotterdam Polymer Hub (RPH) signed an allocation agreement regarding a site for two halls for the storage and distribution of polymers. RPH will be the first logistics node in the Rotterdam port area to focus exclusively on the storage of polymers. The project is a joint initiative of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Euro-Rhine Group and entrepreneur Geert Van De Ven.

In the first three quarters of 2018, total throughput in the port of Rotterdam was 0.4% lower than in the same period the previous year. Container volumes continued to grow at a markedly higher pace than the first nine months of 2017 – even recording a new all- time high in August. Wet and dry bulk, however, showed a decline in volume – although LNG and biomass were two positive outliers within these product segments. All in all, 350 million tonnes of cargo was handled in the port of Rotterdam, a decrease of 1.5 million tonnes compared to last year. The port expects to make up some of the difference in the fourth quarter, so that the throughput recorded for 2018 in its entirety will be more or less equal to that of 2017.

Port Everglades reached a record high in containerized cargo this past fiscal year with 1,108,465 TEUs moving through the Port. Port Canaveral announced that the port’s growing diverse cargo portfolio reported double-digit increases in FY ‘18 revenues, rising by 18% from FY ’17 to an all-time high of $10.15 million. Cargo tonnage in 2018 rose to 6,404,944 tons, a 6.9% increase over the previous year.
