d eman d increases, the

expanded rail yard is projected to eliminate an estimated 1,250 truck trips per day by 2040.

Shiſting the amount of

containers currently moved off- dock miles from the port to on- dock rail at the port complex is a key strategy of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) 2017 Update; the California Sustainable Freight Action Plan and the California Freight Mobility Plan. The Los Angeles Harbor

Commission formally approved the project’s Final Initial Study/ Mitigated Negative Declaration

in early October, which concluded the environmental review process. The port is currently preparing the final design. The construction contract

award is expected

by June 2020, with project completion by early 2022. More than 300 construction jobs are expected to be created during the course of the project. The Terminal Island Railyard

Enhancement Project is one of eight interrelated rail projects collectively known as America’s Global

Freight

Gateway: Southern California Rail

Project. The package consists of rail improvements within the harbor complex,

including two at the Port of Los Angeles, and grade separation projects at critical junctures across

Los Angeles County.

The port’s partner agencies are the Port of Long Beach, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Alameda Corridor – East Construction Authority. In May, the California Commission million

$128.6 received grants in

TCEP funding to six of the eight projects. The Port of Los Angeles

for

both its projects: the Terminal Island Railyard Enhancement

Project and the Alameda Corridor Southern Terminus Gap Closure. The latter will add a double-track segment between the on-dock rail yards serving the TraPac and West Basin Containers terminals, creating a safer, more direct connection to the Alameda Corridor. Both

rail projects support

California’s larger sustainable freight

and mobility goals.

They also meet federal and state grant requirements for major transportation projects to improve air quality, spur job growth, ease congestion and benefit disadvantaged and low- income communities.

Bahri highlights growing US presence

Highlighting its growing presence in the U.S., Bahri, a global leader in logistics and transportation, represented by Bahri Logistics, one of the company’s business units, participated at Breakbulk Americas 2018, the largest exhibition for the project cargo and breakbulk industry in the region, held from October 2-4 in Houston, Texas. “Bahri has entered a new

phase of growth and the roadmap for its future hinges on sustained expansion in regional and international markets and strengthening of maritime transportation capabilities,” said Ahmed Al-Ghaith, President, Bahri

Logistics. “The strong

recovery of the global economy and the rising growth in emerging

and transition markets are presenting bright prospects and new opportunities

for Bahri

and the transportation industry in general, with the Americas remaining a key growth market.” Emphasizing the importance

of the region in Bahri’s long-term growth strategy, Bahri Logistics highlighted its continued expansion in this market. The business unit opened its second North American office in 2017, in Granite Briarpark Green in Houston, which has helped Bahri

complement its U.S.

headquarters in Baltimore and further strengthen its presence and position in the country’s largest breakbulk and general cargo port, the Port of Houston. Bahri

Logistics has been

calling the port for over three decades and is one of the few companies offering a full-liner multipurpose ro-ro, breakbulk and containerized service from the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports of the U.S. and Canada to the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, with way ports in the Mediterranean and Europe. Port of Virginia sets new all-time mark for monthly cargo volume

The Port of Virginia® in October processed more than 270,000 TEUs and in doing so set a new record for the amount of cargo volume handled in a single month, besting the previous record set in 2017 by more than 5,000 units. The record was driven by a 2%

increase in loaded imports and a 14.5% increase in export empties. John F. Reinhart, the CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, said as the port’s capacity expansion projects at Virginia International Gateway

(VIG) and Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) move forward, the effort is to draw-down the empty container inventory to better focus on loaded units and building efficiency. “As construction progresses at

VIG and NIT we have to remain flexible and be ready with those decisions that help to ensure the efficient movement of loaded containers across our terminals,” Reinhart said. “Our emphasis is on loaded exports and imports and reducing the number of empties on terminal is an approach that

has been successful here. “The record volume, especially

during construction, put a significant amount of pressure on the gates and there were some trying moments last month for motor carriers. We are taking steps to create greater flexibility in our gate hours and add more chassis to the pool to build fluidity. The motor carriers are critical to our success and we are working to create consistency for them when they are on terminal.” October’s record, Reinhart said, could not have been achieved

breakbulk, project, and ro-ro cargoes, including heavyweight and over-dimensional loads up to 220 metric tons. Earlier in 2018, Bahri Logistics

reached a new milestone as its Bahri Hofuf vessel discharged the heaviest piece of cargo that Bahri’s vessels have ever handled. A floating crane was deployed to assist with moving the cargo weighing 266 MT to a barge at the Port of Houston.

without teamwork across the port. “The

effort of our labor

partners in this record must be emphasized,” Reinhart said. “The motor carriers also played an important role as we processed nearly 100,000 truck moves. The port’s operations team needs to be recognized as well for its flexibility, planning and its focus on safety and efficiency.” On a fiscal year basis

(starting July 1), loaded exports are flat and imports are up nearly 4%. Volume at Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal is 16.5% ahead of last October and cargo moving on the Richmond Express barge service is up nearly 51%. Both rail and truck volume were up, comparatively, as well.

The Canaveral Port Authority has been awarded a total of $1.149 million in federal and state grants for port security operations and cybersecurity systems. The port received a $1 million Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) award for FY2018 by USDHS, FEMA, and a $149,000 grant for FY2019 from the Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) program.

The Port of New Orleans received the Plan Excellence Award from the American Planning Association Louisiana Chapter Oct. 4, 2018, for Port NOLA’s Strategic Master Plan, Port NOLA Forward, a bold vision to deliver significant, sustained economic benefit throughout the Port’s three-parish jurisdiction – Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes. “The Port’s Master Plan was awarded the Excellence Award for marrying together robust and broad outreach with sophisticated technical analyses, resulting in a clear plan for the future with detailed implementation strategies,” said Derek Chisholm, APA Louisiana President.

The Port of Virginia’s® Wider, Deeper, Safer project to deepen and widen the Norfolk Harbor’s commercial shipping channels has secured full federal authorization by the President of the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018. The project’s inclusion in the bill clears the path for The Port of Virginia to become the deepest and safest port on the U.S East Coast. The dredge work will take the inner harbor’s commercial channels to 55 feet deep and the channel in the Chesapeake Bay to 56 feet deep. Further, the channel will be widened to as much as 1,400 feet in select areas, which will allow for two-way traffic of ultra-large container vessels. The project’s target completion date is 2025.
