solent business awards

Best Company to Work For – Marwell Wildlife

Management Team of the Year – The Training Room

Judges’ comments: Our winner is already a well-known and well- loved attraction in the Solent region; however we have probably not thought of it as an important local business that employs over 300 people. The judging panel was particularly impressed with the diversity of its employees – from the younger staff gaining valuable experience, to the highly-qualified specialists and the vast group of volunteers in-between. An employee has to have the right attitude and behaviour, but is rewarded with a close, honest family culture, a well-trained management team, and a fully engaged chief executive with his weekly blog and a clear sense of fun.

Company of the Year – Colten Care

Judges’ comments: The quality of entrants into this year’s competition was outstanding. Our winning management team stood out by demonstrating great skill, and some notable achievements, in each of the key categories assessed by the judges. The panel was particularly impressed with the sheer extent of strategic progress made over the past 18-24 months, especially given that within that period, the winning team has had to adapt and face some significant challenges. Their positive and unrelenting focus on developing their people, their product proposition and their channels to market, shone through – as did, above all, their passion for seeing their customers (predominantly individuals seeking to gain new skills) – thrive and succeed.

Judges’ comments: The judges were hugely impressed with all the entries and in particular had a tough time selecting the winner from the seven finalists. The winner impressed the judges as a carefully run business with a strong management team and with business metrics to match – strong profitability and growth alongside low debt. It delivers a quality product to its customers, which is recognised in particular by its regulator and customers alike. This is a business that cares about its staff, community and environment, for example, an innovation committee representing the staff voice and the removal of plastics from their business.
