Channelling their efforts into charity relay swim

After many months of training, local businesswoman, Rachael Whiston, has completed a relay swim across the English Channel to raise funds for Age UK Exeter. Rachael, Managing Director of

communications agency, Absolute PR & Marketing, along with four other open water swim enthusiasts, completed the swim from Dover to the French coast on Sunday 30 September. The challenging

‘Nothing prepares you

relay swim began at 2.20 am. Rachael completed several legs of the relay, battling the cold early morning temperatures, swimming in fearsome currents and crossing the busiest shipping lanes in the world, where over 600 tankers and 200 passenger ferries traverse daily. Reflecting on her swim, Rachael said:

for the moment when it’s your turn to drop off the side of the boat’

“Even after months of training, nothing prepares you for the moment when it’s your turn to drop off the side of the boat into the pitch black sea below, with no moonlight to provide a guiding light. I’m proud to have undertaken this challenge – my most exhilarating yet - knowing that funds raised will be helping elderly people in our society who are alone and lonely. I became a trustee of Age UK Exeter after witnessing my own grandfather struggling to remain independent at home and the thought that I was making a difference spurred me on throughout the swim. I’m most grateful to everyone who has encouraged me with both kind messages of support and generous sponsorship for the charity.” Rachael has raised over £1,316.00 so far.
