LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES FROM DEVON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
a gateway to the world of work
A recent working trip to Den Bosch in Holland for Lesley Shorrocks, Deputy Chief Executive of Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, concluded the end of an important two-year European project with partners from City College Plymouth.
The Erasmus project brought together experts from the UK, Finland, the Netherlands and Austria in a series of workshops during a two-year period to examine the interface between the worlds of education and work and make suggestions for the improvement in advice given to potential employees. The issue is highly topical, as
many businesses within Europe are concerned that too few students or school leavers receive the advice and encouragement needed to prepare themselves for careers in key sectors such as construction, manufacturing and hospitality. Lesley was accompanied by Devon Chamber Director and MD of International Matters Linda Middleton-Jones and Chamber member Paul Philpott of Freshair Studios, as they joined Fiona Horrell, Director of Strategic Partnerships, and Sarah Sinclair, Careers Manager of City College Plymouth. Lesley commented: “The project

is drawing to a close now and the final report will be published shortly, recommending a number of initiatives and toolkits which will help careers guidance teachers to advise students with improved careers guidance and understanding of labour market conditions. Students will then be signposted to ways of benefiting from a better understanding of the real world of work. The report will also feature ways to encourage young people to develop the right skills for the modern world.”
