Congratulations to Beccles Taekwon-do students FIVE students from Beccles
Taekwon-do Club travelled 150 miles to Ryton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry, where their Black Belt grading took place on Saturday 27th October. Taekwon-do Black Belt gradings are a test of mental and physical abilities, three pattern sequences of strikes, kicks and blocks; self defence, step sparring, full sparring, the breaking of two inch pine boards with hand and feet techniques, Korean theory along with a thesis about Taekwon-do which students need to prepare in the months beforehand. This grading is a true
test of the student and their preparation, with no quarter given throughout a gruelling day, performed in front of the GTUK senior instructors including Master Aucellio 7th Degree, and Grand Master Oldham 9th Degree whose
history links the Beccles club back to the originator of Taekwon-do General Choi Hong Hi in 1955. It takes great dedication and commitment to learn Taekwon- do, with up to four years training to become a 1st Degree Taekwon-do Black Belt, on your journey you achieve a great level of confidence, strength, fitness and can make lifetime friendships along the way.
Club instructors Mr and
Mrs Bedingfield have worked tirelessly over the last few months to ready their students for this challenge, and have been rewarded with these fantastic results on their 100% Black Belt grading and congratulations to: Jason Drake 2nd Degree, Black Belt; Barbara Mazza 1.5 Degree, Black Belt; Bella Gibson Junior 1st Degree, 1st Star, Black Belt; Liam Mills Junior

ONE of the most frequently asked questions I get from landlords is “do I have to pay tax on the rent I receive?” The answer of course, is yes, and despite many years of incentives for individuals to become landlords the government
increasingly
devises ways to make it less attractive to do so. None more so than our current commanders. On one hand, let`s say the left one for the point of this exercise, we are warned that if we don`t build more houses no-one will have anywhere to live. Now this poses a bit of a problem, since if the general populous cannot afford to buy the shiny new homes the developers put up they, erring on the side of caution, hope that some of the stock will be taken up by property investors; so it’s a win win for them then? Not really though, since if Mr, or Mrs investor cannot achieve a minimum gross return of around 5% then they are

generally not interested. It`s certainly not “if you build it, they will come” to quote a line from film. Does this therefore make developers, major housebuilders excepted, a little less likely to keep chucking up houses if the higher powers don`t make it more tax efficient to do so? I believe in chess they call this a stalemate. Anyway, getting back to my
main point – tax. It is essential that a new
landlord registers for self- assessment with HMRC as soon as they start receiving rent. Easy to forget when, at the last minute, you are rushing around buying curtains and lightshades and throwing some paint around before the tenants move in. But forget at your peril. The HMRC is now contacting landlords to partake in a form filling exercise to make sure that they have paid all the tax due from rents they have received. It`s a bit like the knife/gun armistice but with this you will get fined, but not quite as much if you own up before they catch you. Jon Wicks is Managing
Director of Templewicks Estate Agents in Beccles with over 30 years experience in the industry.
