Keeping it Real!
BECCLES Beer Festival returns to Public Hall. Now in its seventh year, the Beccles Beer Festival has become one of the most popular events in Beccles calendar and a celebration of local real ales, ciders and craft lager. Last year more than 1500
people visited the three day beer festival, drinking over 5,000 pints from 26 different breweries and four cider makers, all in Norfolk and Suffolk. This year there will be 30 different ales including a good selection of gluten-free and vegan. Organisers Graham Elliott
and Beccles Lido Director, Shaun Crowley, told us “This is the biggest beer festival in the region and real ale enthusiasts travel from all over East Anglia. It’s not just a celebration of local ales but it’s held in Beccles Public Hall to raise funds for Beccles Lido, and run by Hall and Lido volunteers – so it also celebrates these two fantastic community run Beccles attractions!” From Friday 16th - Sunday
18th November, the seventh Beccles Beer Festival will feature some very special new ales not widely available on draft anywhere else, as well as festival stalwart Green Jack Ripper! As in previous years there
will be live music on Friday and Saturday night, with local festival favourites Owl &
THE next meeting of the Beccles Flower Arranging Club will take place on Wednesday 28th November at 7.15pm at Blyburgate Hall Beccles. AT the October meeting Cathy Small, Santander, gave a talk on protecting yourself from fraud. There was considerable audience participation and below are the top tips which came out of the meeting: Top tips 1. Do you really
know who is calling? If you’re not sure, say you’ll call back using a different phone. 2. Don’t click on links in emails if you are not 100% sure who has sent it. Is the email trying to scare you into action? Phishing emails often contain threats of account suspension or immediate risk of fraud. 3. Use anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date. 4. Never download files and programmes unless you are absolutely certain they are genuine. 5. Ensure you have strong passwords that cannot be easily guessed such as a pet name, and change regularly.
6. Don’t share
personal information on social media e.g. don’t post your
Wolves on Friday with their old school blues and skiffle; and Baku & Beyond playing popular classic covers on Saturday night. Sunday is a more relaxed day and families with well behaved children are welcome. As usual, the Public Hall will
also have a fully licensed bar selling wines, spirits and soft drinks for the non-ale drinkers; and there will be a good selection of hot and cold snacks to complement the beer, served by Lido volunteers. All funds raised will go to the
Lido’s biggest ever fundraising project to refurbish, update and re-line the main pool. Fundraising is going really well (watch out for some big announcements coming soon) and you can find out all about the project or make a donation at
uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ Team/NewLiner The Lido also features in
Tesco’s latest Bags of Help campaign and you can help raise up to £4,000 by asking for a token when you shop and putting it in the Lido’s slot. Shaun Crowley told us
“Community fundraising – whether at the Beer Festival, online donations or in Tesco really do help convince grant funders that Beccles supports the Lido.” For more information visit

OCTOBER has flown by but as well as our twice weekly indoor Junior Sportshall sessions and twice weekly outdoor junior and adult running sessions, the club has been extremely busy with lots of competitions, races, events and our weekly Parkrun meets. There are generally around 30-40 of us taking part in these free weekly timed events, aimed for everybody whether its walking, jogging, running, with your dog, with children etc - the training that we do during the week makes us stronger and quicker, helping us to reach the ultimate aim of a new personal best time! Here is a round-up of what we

LOCAL lad, 17 year old Charlie Brooks from Reydon, sure has something to smile about! The young man, who rides Speed- way for the Eastbourne Eagles, is celebrating with his team mates for winning the National League Championship, and the National league KO Cup, for 2018. Charlie has been on a bike
since the age of four, coached by his uncle Adam Shipp (former grass track British champion). As well as being the former Youth British champion for grass track, he also competed in the Long track (similar to speed- way) World championships in the Czech Republic last summer, scooping an incredible third in the world on his first attempt and coming away with a glorious FIM medal. Charlie rides in a reserve berth
holiday photographs whilst on holiday. 7. Shred or burn sensitive information – do not put straight into the bin. 8. Pay by credit cards which have a level of fraud protection built in. 9. Don’t let your card out of your sight at restaurants. 10. Shop only on secure websites. Look for a padlock or an unbroken key symbol on your web browser. 11. Only connect to secure Wi-Fi. Fraudsters can set up hotspots in public areas. Avoid logging onto online accounts that store any financial info. 12. Limit use of cash machines to those inside your bank. In summary don’t be pressurised into taking action. Take a moment to evaluate, do an online search or talk to someone else. Next U3A meeting:
Wednesday 19th December is the Christmas meeting for members.

for the Eagles, usually at number seven, and currently has an aver- age of 4.53. Having completed his first season with the club, he is improving all the time, as evi- denced recently at Arlington Sta- dium when he scored 19 points and one bonus, out of a possible 21. It was his most spectacular performance of the season at that point, as he won his first six rides, including three races in a row! Despite having to travel some distance for home meet- ings, he's settled in really well this season with the Eastbourne Eagles. In order for Charlie to

progress next season we need to find some more sponsorship to see him through 2019. Sadly, without any kind of sponsor- ship, however big or small, it’s virtually impossible for him to progress another year. Racing costs are approximately £12,000 a season (March to October) and each year that cost rises to accommodate specialist engine/ bike repairs in order for him to progress on quicker and faster bikes. Our sponsors range from £150 per season, although any sponsorship, however small it may seem, really is a big help to Charlie and Adam and would be gratefully received. “This season has been a great
learning curve for me. I have loved every minute of it! How- ever, next season I really hope to increase my average and to ride within the main body of my team. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me in any way this year; I couldn’t do this with- out you guys! My aim for next season is to progress further and hopefully make my supporters, friends and family proud once again.” It certainly has been a season
to remember for this budding young star. Well done! If you would like to know
more, have any questions or you/your company would like to kindly sponsor Charlie next year please do not hesitate to drop an email to: laurabrooks108@
