Sport England Active Lives survey

This year Sport England will be repeating the Active Lives Children and Young People Survey, which measures participation in and attitudes to sport and physical activity among children and young people in Years 1 to 11. The information that they collect will help Sport England where to invest in opportunities for children and young people to take part in and benefit from sport and physical activity.

Schools are randomly selected to participate in the survey with up to three classes or tutor groups taking part in an online survey at school. The questionnaire includes questions on sports facilities and the PE offer in your school. By asking a few questions to a teacher from each school, this reduces the number of questions they need to ask pupils. There are also a few questions about the PE and sport premium funding (for primary teachers), supporting the transition of pupils between primary and secondary school, how pupils travel to school and School Food

10 Wiltshire and Swindon Relay

Standards . In most cases a teacher involved in PE will be best placed to complete the survey but this is flexible and it is up to your school to decide who would be the best person to take part. Only one teacher from each school needs to complete a questionnaire.

All schools that participate in the survey will receive a bespoke report outlining the results from their school, designed to help schools look at their PE and School Sport Offer. Sport England will also provide all participating schools with a modest financial reward to thank them for their involvement in the research. 40 schools from Wiltshire and Swindon will be randomly selected to participate this year, although any school can opt in to the survey and receive the report. If you would like more information about the study please contact Kate Light at WASP kate@ wiltssport.org

Smash up Badminton Making break times more fun !

Abbeyfield School Sports Enrichment Co-ordinators and Sports Ambassadors are making breaktimes more fun and interesting, with the support and guidance of Community Sports Leader, Mrs Pierce.

Every lunchtime “Smash Up Badminton” is offered in the Sports Hall to years 7 only. Smash Up Badminton, is the governing body’s youth badminton initiative aimed at inspiring all abilities to swing a racket for fun, whilst meeting new people and playing “beat the Sports Enrichment Co ordinator”, along with many other games

Mrs Pierce quotes: “It’s a different style of badminton in a relaxed and fun environment; it gets students relaxed and joining in, in a non competitive way It’s been a huge success; enjoyed by all in an environment with music playing where students have been able to express how they want to play it, it gets them into the sport then the technique can be picked up at after school clubs

and in lessons.” It been great to see the Sports Enrichment Co-ordinators and Sports Ambassadors that have taken on all the leadership, they have trained other students, its been great to see peers leading it, they are much more engaged.”. “It’s not focused on the competition and matches it gives the ownership back to the kids they choose the games they want they can do. This could not happen without the dedicated Sports Enrichment co ordinators Harrison Jones / Hollyann Wood / Ethan Pierce / Janisha Kaur / Hannah Yendley.
