Light up a Life brings people together, not just from the Hospice but from the wider community, to remember and to celebrate the lives of the people they have lost. For Vanessa and her mum, it was

the perfect way to commemorate Alan: “We were surrounded by people who had all shared similar experiences so it was okay to feel happy or sad, or both. It was such an uplifting and moving event, exactly the sort of thing my dad would have loved.”

Never forgetting to remember

Friends and families dedicate stars to their loved ones which are blessed during a special remembrance service and subsequently hung on the Heart of Kent Hospice Christmas tree. For the people who attend, it’s an opportunity to laugh, to cry and to share the warmth and support of the Hospice community.

How volunteers can help so much

The service is also an opportunity to re-connect with some of the amazing

people who work at Heart of Kent Hospice. Doreen, a Healthcare Assistant, is one of those people. For over 26 years, Doreen has been helping families create beautiful and lasting memories together.

“Doreen danced with patients…witnessed their joy and courage”

She has danced with patients, helped to choose and wrap presents for their family, and witnessed their joy and courage. It’s Doreen’s mission to make sure that no-one feels alone, especially at Christmas, and this year she will be doing a special reading at the Hospice Light up a Life service.

Doreen and the many other colleagues and volunteers at Heart of Kent Hospice support families through what can be very difficult times. Today they are providing care and support to over 670 people in Maidstone and the surrounding area, helping them and their families to live the very best life possible. As well as caring for people’s physical needs, the Hospice supports them emotionally and spiritually, and Light up a Life is a wonderful opportunity to bring people together to reflect on, and to celebrate, the lives of their loved ones.

Why not join us for this year’s Light up a Life celebrations on Sunday 25th November at Heart of Kent Hospice, or Sunday 2nd December at Aylesford Priory, and dedicate a star to someone who has brought light and joy to your life.
